Mail In Front Of Cab

Just had information regarding the issue on Mail in front of van - Mail for immediate delivery can no longer be carried in the front of the vehicle.
I know why its because of the bond/licence that applies to all mail courier services provided by Postcom the regulator.
So, dont believe your managers when they say ' You can have the working bundle in the van while you drive to your next delivery point '
answer YOU CANNOT, Royal mail do not have a say in this matter........Only the REGULATOR !!!!

Just been on the phone with someone from Postcom and its true....We need to work from the back of the van at all times, minimising theft of mail from vehicles (especially when its on show in front of van, not acceptable)

This as far as i'm aware has always been the correct way it should be done no wonder they don't push to get it done this way i can assure you it certainly adds a little time to your delivery......of course i speak from experience

When IB came to our office, they told us that it doesn't matter what mail is visible, as long as you are in attendance. Now that is obviously open to interpretation, but I take it to mean that if it is visible to you, and you are the closest person to it, then you are in attendance. Its only the same as a postie carrying a bag of mail, they are in attendance and the closest to it. Someone would have to do something violent to get it from you. Therefore with rurals, you can have trays of mail in the front, which most people do anyhow. Any bits where you aren't in attendance, you need to work from the back of the van. Lets be serious, some rural duties would take 50% longer were you to go to the back of the van 300 times a day.

Its the same attitude from RM as always. They never explicitly outlaw these practices because they know the job would go tits up. For instance, they say we should never veer from correct delivery procedures regarding leaving parcels. If they really meant it, why don't they just say that the next person who does it is sacked, full stop, no questions?? Everybody would instantly stop doing these practices, but the job would go tits up, they know it and we know it.
I challenge them to say it. If IB catch you with any mail visible, you are sacked instantly. If you are found to leave any parcel incorrectly, you are sacked. If you are seen with no seatbelt, you are sacked instanly. If you are caught speeding, you are sacked instantly. Many people are doing these things and barely finishing on time now. If they enforced this they had better get there wallets out!

When I worked for Tesco Insurance we were told of a case where a guy had left his car unlocked with the keys in the ignition while he went to pay for petrol. His car was unfortunately stolen and the insurance company tried to claim he was negligent and therefore not covered because he'd left his keys in the ignition and left the vehicle. However, the ombudsman overturned their decision because he could still see the vehicle and therefore wasn't negligent. Apparently.

So I'd be very careful about this kinda thing because unless there's something in black and white/writing, I'd keep the mail out of sight and work from the back of the van. We've been told on many occasions to keep the mail out of sight so I'd do just that.

My answer to this is simple though. If someone could take your vehicle or the mail before you could get to it, then you weren't the closest to it were you?
Down a farm track where you can see for miles around is a rather different situation. Also I RM does have a zero tolerance on leaving keys in your van, therefore I would never do this apart from when you literally step out to put mail in a box at your drivers side.

Why not do as i do and only put one item mail in the cab if you cannot gain access to the back of the van at the next stop if you leave mail in front of the van while outside of it you will be done for it even if you can see it!. It is just the same as a postman/woman putting their bag on a wall ten feet/ three meter's away only for some scum bag in a car to nick it as you watch them drive off!. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

DONT HAVE MAIL IN ON THE PASSENGER SEAT FULL STOP !!! NO MAIL IN FRONT OF VAN EVEN FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY, ITS A NO,NO !!!

I have had claification on this from Postcom & I.B. ' What if, you had stopped at a junction in your van, somebody could easily open the passenger door and thief your bundle of mail on the passenger seat' SIMPLE DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!
