To clarify Marky
Are you saying that as soon as someone takes on a CWU job higher up the chain, they are automatically on the gravy train?
How does one not jump on the gravy train but take on a higher up union job?

Re: would you sell out,
Someone else has posted a relevant answer in that no one denies there are good reps BUT it has become increasingly obvious that many reps at all levels in all disciplines are, how can I put this, rather in amour of the position rather than the interests of the membership, when personal interest outweighs honest endeavour then you're on the gravy train. Some see these jobs as merely a stepping stone to a "higher up" union job for their own self aggrandisement and make decisions based on whether or not it has a personal advantage not an advantage to all - they're getting on the bisto choo choo too. Can you honestly say that you believe that some of the decisions taken by "higher ups" in recent years have been beneficial to the membership?Big Daz wrote:To clarify Marky

Re: would you sell out,
In answer to your question, many times the CWU postal mbrs get what they vote for.
However some things we havent/never voted on such as that poxy savings for payrise aggrement that netted us £3 a week payrise 2006 was it? Biggest let down ever!!!
Take flexibilty impact on my office virtually unoticeable, yet other offices its had a big impact. How do i judge if It was a good decison to recomend it to the mbrs? Do I base it on my office or the nightmare stories I read on RMC?

Re: would you sell out,
Yes every 12 months whenever in that period your branch holds it elections.
You would need to ensure your current rep is not the only canidate for local rep otherwise he or she will be relected unopposed for a further 12 months.
H & S reps are elected every 2 years.

This is so right! but why do Div Reps etc. never change? they are elected after all...Someone else has posted a relevant answer in that no one denies there are good reps BUT it has become increasingly obvious that many reps at all levels in all disciplines are, how can I put this, rather in amour of the position rather than the interests of the membership, when personal interest outweighs honest endeavour then you're on the gravy train. This is not the place to air ' your kind' of grivences and you have been warned before, and i have explained that i have been threatened with legal action because of you and the NI num1 branch members postings.
Enough is enough, get your branch members together and do something about it elsewhere.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: would you sell out,
Thats a easy question, either they get elected unopposed for various reasons or they simply win the vote when the position is contested.parky wrote: This is so right! but why do Div Reps etc. never change? they are elected after all...

Re: would you sell out,
One of the problems with that, is that you need someone with some experience, to contest Divisional Reps. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to do a good job, if they win. Most of the people who complain (in my experience), aren't even Local Reps yet. So it would be pointless standing for the Post.Big Daz wrote:Thats a easy question, either they get elected unopposed for various reasons or they simply win the vote when the position is contested.parky wrote: This is so right! but why do Div Reps etc. never change? they are elected after all...
So the problem is: What can we do about it, if we can't convince the best Reps to stand for Divisional Rep?
You could stand against a good Rep.. Assuming you could win (unlikley if they are good), you would have to try to fill his/her shoes. Would anyone risk that?
I wouldn't. I have good Reps, and wouldn't want them to be replaced, just for someone to get enough experience to be ready for a more senior position. That would be crazy!
So the question remains: What other route (if any), remains for people to try to influence a "bad" Divisional Rep?

So if there are so many good DRs, and nobodies in a strong enough position to stand, then why is the union so weak?

Re: would you sell out,
Div reps have had no elections for years now this is because of RM do not want div reps so wouldn't regonize any new elections of div reps, this clearly should not continue, but what do you do? Div reps right now are in the job and can't be removed even though some are useless. (Some however are spot on). This is so right! but why do Div Reps etc. never change? they are elected after all...

What I SAID was: That unless you can convince an experienced Rep to stand against them. Then there's no-one in a position to do a good job, available. I did suggest that you could stand against a Local Rep, to get experience (if you won). But that would mean loosing a good Rep, just to get experience.
A better idea, would be for someone to stand against a poor Local Rep. Then, you wouldn't be loosing anything by replacing him/her. But then, who would carry on, once you go on to "bigger and better" things?
The bad Rep?
There must be something else we can do, surely! Particularly for those of us who already have good Local Reps.
Then again. This is just my opinion.

Re: would you sell out,
Sub rep is a good place to start do some courses so you have a good understanding of CWU/RM aggrements/procedures. Gain some experience by covering reps leave and 12 months later put in for rep and give the mbrs choice? We all want a good rep but as a rank and file member it is nice to have a choice now and again. As a rep its nice to be elected because the membership chose me rather than I got in due to being the only person to stand.
