With regard to what exactly? I've dealt with them on a number of occasions and found them to be professional if a bit misguided john.

I've only dealt with them personally, once. And I've already told the story a couple of times, so I won't bore you with it again. But I have a great deal of respect for them. They're not perfect. No-one is. But they were catching criminals, long before Sir Robert Peel, even thought of setting up the Police.

You're talking about ONE case,so you can't generalise.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Please turn off your caps - its internet speak for shouting.

Also most people working in RM should already know that they have Investigative powers only, they are not allowed to enter your property or search you without your permission, but they can make a citizens arrest and wait for the real police to turn up.

You're right about them being Civilians. But that doesn't mean that they aren't good at what they do. I've never been a suspect, so I don't know what they're like, when you're on the recieving end. But I was impressed with them, when I had dealings with them.

They have investigating powers of that of any one whom is given license to do so for thier employment however yor rights are different when dealing with employees / civillians they are in fact the same as ordinary store detective.
As for citizens arrest, this action can only be carried out by the arresting person should they have WITNESSED a crime being undertaken. They CANNOT arrest you under suspicion .YOU have the right to walk away ....... see section 24 of the PACE .
IB cannot carry out section 18 searches the same as a police officer they CANNOT SEARCH YOU/YOUR CAR / YOUR HOME WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION. if this happens you may refuse and still walk away, they MUST STATE TO YOU THAT THEY ARE GOING TO CITIZENS ARREST.
Should you find yourself in this situation my advice is DO NOT SAY A SINGLE WORD you will incriminate yourself as the IB will note down waht you say and produce this as evidence .
DO NOT AGREE TO A TAPED INTERVIEW WITH IB employees.insist it is carried out by police officers,IB can interview you but they need official permission to interview you from the police ,again under the PACE act,in this situation enforce your rights to remain silent SAY NOTHING .you will incriminate yourself....say nothin save it for court...
Any IB questions will be used to incriminate you so silence is the key, however should you find yourself making any informal admissions whilst under interview you may retract them under section 9 and 10 of the criminal justice act in court , so best stay quiet for the interview by police or IB.
Should you make FORMAL admissions then you ,your counsel present should SIGN THEM prsonally i would avoid this.
The postal service act that deals with wilful delay of mail section 83 (6) , should you deny wilfully delaying mail ,the postal services act states that you carried out this action with forsight without good reason, if you have a genuine reason for mail being delayed , the act is your get out clause....READ IT PROPERLY
insist that your court case is heard in crown court AVOID MAGISTRATES COURTS IF YOU GO TO TRIAL.aquittal rates in front of a jury are far higher than case hardened JPs..trust me on that one.You only need to cast reasonable doubt on one member of the jury that your story is founded and you HAVE GOOD REASON FOR MAIL DELAY to be aquitted , a magistrate will not hear your story fully a jury HAVE TO . wILL POST MORE COS THERE IS LOADS.....TA

Thanks for that info, Discoinferno. I already knew that IB can only perform a Citizens Arrest, and that they had to witness the Crime, in order to do so. I also knew that they can't perform a search, without your consent. But what I DIDN'T know. Was that you can refuse to be interviewed by them. And insist on the Police doing it, instead. That's good to know, for anyone who has reservations about dealing with IB.

A friend of a friend told me that due to the fines RM are receiving from Postcom and also the bad media surrounding Mail integrity.
The I.B. have had there backsides kicked recently for not doing enough on theft etc. 'You cannot catch thiefs sitting in office waiting for it to happen, you should be out there stopping it happening' !! was one comment.
Thats why we see more of them out on the streets watching how we operate (managers know this and dont tell us anything because if they did, all the good will of the staff would stop as they would need to abide by the Mail Integrity they have signed in WTL sessions - We all know by doing the job properly you would claim O/T on daily basis or cut-off)
Also if we do lose our jobs by not doing the job properly they regard it as a saving.
