A postman faces the sack after he placed a little girl's Christmas gifts in a wheelie-bin and they ended up on a rubbish tip.

He left a card at five-year-old Nicole Brown's home saying what he had done.

But minutes later binmen collected the wheelie bin and took it to a landfill site.

Nicole's mum Dawn, 27, from Canterbury, Kent, said: "It's really upset us."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The postman acted with good intentions but it was unacceptable and action is being taken."

My DOM 'suggested' that all packets should be doorstepped over Christmas No chance, mine all came back

delivered letter today uk mail downstream access item
in address window along with name address postcode etc was this little gem
if unable to deliver put in bin round back i kid you not
this is not first on reading postman from ayr leaving item in bin as above and bin being moved
i noticed 2 items while delivering nxt day same mess as above and another
leave round back if no reply
again both uk mail postings
question is this way competition operates are they deliberately putting customers messages on envelope fronts
why not just disclose bank details or what time customers are out.
how can any head of companies allow such messages to be printed
it actually gives postman clear instruction on what to do
wtf is going on and these companies want stakes in our business ( sorry public service ha ha f in ha)

the only ones you should follow are royal mail tracked items displaying safeplace details

You may also follow offical written instructions from the customer that have been deposited with the dom.

We can't win, similar thing last year I p739 saying item left in bin. Nest day got an utter bollocking and did nearly lose my job, customer got parcel but complained on the " what if " scenario. So now if a customer asks me to leave a parcel anywhere I explain what happened and ask they put it in writing, most of them are very understanding and do so. Yes it can be a pain and I'm certainly well known in the post office, but at least I won't get sacked for it. Yes customers complain they have to go to the Post office.

Royal Mail now offer a service that allows people to get there parcel delivered directly to the post office and we tell them when it's there. This sounds superb from our point of view as saves us standing there writing out p739s etc. but guess what the sender has to pay a licence fee of £500 I think and it's only available to business senders. With us now doing Ebay postage surely it would be really simple to offer post office collection for free through paypal. Or are RM too thick to realise that it will save time fuel etc rather than failed deliveries.

It depends, if he's FT then he'll be down the river but if he's PT then he'll probably be OK.

if there is no reply when you knock the door leave a p739,when i started as a delievery postman 18' years ago, i remember the manager telling me , just follow royal mails directives YOU ARE NOT PAID TO THINK,do that you cant go wrong so i did right down to cutting off and leaving mail for him and his line mangers to collect when my hours were up.with the best intensions postmen are dropping themselves right in the s**t, dont cut corners, start on time, dont work a second over and dont use your car and take your breaks its just a job not a vocation

Very True. Quite rightly RM has some strict procedures in place, yet posties continue to drop themselves in the s**t by not following the rules. I dont have much sympathy really, most now dont give a toss about the job will cut corners as much as possible.

I hope you have facts to back up that comment if not please delete or amend it. I for one do give a toss and from what I can see on here most also care about the job and service we provide.

To say that Most don't give a toss is a very sweeping and inaccurate statement, unless of course you have had direct dealings with all 70,000 + delivery staff and 80,000 + support staff.

Perhaps you meant to say some staff don't give a toss, but it does show what happens when people either use the wrong words, don't think how their statement will be read by someone else, or, make sweeping statements about a section of people when they have not met them personally.

Of course my statement is also sweeping, in that I say most people do care about their job, but its better to make a sweeping comment in praise rather than making one which denigrates them.

Not allowed to give freebies with out postcons concent.Chances are the competition would try to stop it anyway.

ah but it's not a freebie, company sending don't get charged any extra, it's different to the local collect service ( yearly licence fee only ). Can't see what it's got to do with the competition as the system and service is already there it's just Royal Mail are targeting large mail/ internet order business only ( think the minimum was 5000 parcels per year). What I'm saying is as this service exsists to business why not roll it out on Ebay / amazon postage for the larger items that won't go through the letter box and the orderer knows they will be at work, ( lets face it I do this already on ebay and change the address myself to my work address. Changing the order process page should be relatively easy to do as well.

I found a packet on Monday that had been doorstepped last Saturday, I assumed the people must've been away, did'nt want the postie who doorstepped it getting in trouble so I picked it up(bit soggy)left a P739 for it. Next morning got called into the office for not knocking on door when I left card, can't bloody win can u
