Banking Hours Admin

Post by fourkicks »

My line manager is increasing pressure on me to complete the banked hours I owe (around 14), this has been reduced from 20 hours as I used some on xmas pressure. I've barely claimed any overtime in the 5 years I've been at RM and cannot see me doing so in the future, I class myself as efficient and at tops come to work 10 mins early. I'm an FTLR and complete the duties quicker than the person on there own duty, in the time its took be to use up 6 hours a colleague has used up 30 hours on a duty I find hard to "drag out"! Why am I being asked to do extra work for free when others don't? Do these banked hours have to be used up? What are the consequences if they aren't? What happened to praise for not claiming overtime?

I'm now in training in a new career where efficiency will be appreciated and not abused... :hmmmm

Why have you banked hours?
There should be no banking of hours unless agreed.

Coming in 10 minutes earlier is NOT being efficient, its stupidity.

5 x 10mins = 50 minutes per week for free.

Do your job properly!!!

What is "banking hours"?

If it is what it sounds like then I can't believe some people are actually doing this!

The main point I'm trying to get across is whats expected of you. I've been asked to work my day off in order to write off 8 banked hours (i.e work a day for nothing)! Is it me or is that unbelievable?? I've also been told to come to work at 4:15 to do extra sorting (with no extra shift allowance) but my start time is 5:35, thats an extra 1hour 20 mins on a day for nothing!?! The worst thing is people in my office have actually rolled over and excepted this, PEOPLE HAVE ACTUALLY WORKED THERE DAY OFF FOR FREE. Does anybody know what happens if I do not use up my banked hours by April? You cannot be forced into overtime yet they expect you to use up these phantom hours!

Unfortunately as there is no National Agreement on banked hours so without seeing the local agreement that brought it in there is no informed advice anyone can give you. Perhaps you could ask to see the agreement in print and then scan it on here and the pool of reps we have would then be able to give considered advice if they wish.

As a side note apparently we are having Banking of Hours imposed on us, at least that is what we were informed off in our WTLL session. AFAIK the union are going down the IR route.

I have had grave doubt about these banked hours whne it came ot the vote and I voted "No", alas it has now come to pass that teh se problem have arisen, for me the concerns was How do you keep account of these hours, who is monitoring it, is it accurate, How do you prevent abuse of the system, where is teh Union regarding this, I have to say I wasn't informed as to how these hours works, I would refuse to work any banked hours anyway, I do my job properly giving them no scope to take the p1ss out of me.

Everybody should do the same, after all they expect to "work the hours we are paid" so you need to utilise thses hours by doing the job properly and no corner cutting.

In my Office there is no banked hours system in place, although flexi working is expected, teh Driver usually end up doing walks uncovered, serves them right for finishing early and standing around the bay smoking and talking while drinking Coffee looking on as I work to my hours coming back at my time etc.

You couldn't have put it better! A classic of example of where these hours come from is when a pal of mine was knocked off his bike while on delivery, he was off work over the entire summer banking period yet accrued 15 owed hours!?!?! When he questioned this his hours were wiped of!! I think in our office they used one of them bingo machines...

The way I was given to understand it was that all banked hours, whether us owing them, or them owing us, had to be equalised by the and of the week. That banked hours could not be held over into the following week. Is this right , or have I got it wrong again ?

That's the 30 minutes flexibility, this is banked hours but I've no idea how any hours can be banked unless the DOM is sending people home on light days and banking the hours for a later date.

What's the difference between 30 minutes flexibility and banked hours then ?

I think that banked hours was that during the summer when the mail is 'light' you'd only work 30hrs per week and that in the autumn pressure you'd have to work 50hrs per week to make up for the summer, at least that was my interpretation of the 'banked hours'.
