SDLP MLA Declan O`Loan has expressed disappointment after Royal Mail refused to introduce an all-island postal tariff.
"I am disappointed not just by this outcome, but by the bureaucratic approach of Royal Mail in London to the issue," he said.
"Despite telling me that a uniform tariff across the island is technically feasible, Royal Mail then went on to find lots of reasons why they would not do it.
"They even suggested that there might be opposition to this proposal from the Republic of Ireland, which I find absurd," Declan O`Loan added.
Royal Mail wrote to Mr O`Loan last month.
"The current delivery cost dynamics between the UK and Republic of Ireland do not support a uniform rate at the same level as domestic 1st Class and therefore the rate would need to be higher," it said.
Royal Mail representative Deborah Warren Griffiths said Irish postal service An Post had a uniform rate of 49p at December`s exchange rates.
She added: "This is comparable to Royal Mail`s 50p international rate meaning cross-border posters may not see any benefit whereas those posting in Northern Ireland for local delivery could see a potentially significant increase for no additional service benefit."
"We believe the current position remains the most appropriate."

British postal service Royal Mail is refusing to introduce an all-island postal tariff.
Differences in cost between the two jurisdictions have been blamed, with the Republic's provider charging almost as much for domestic services as Royal Mail does for its current 'international' service from Northern Ireland.
A Royal Mail representative said An Post had a uniform rate of 49p, comparable to Royal Mail's 50p international rate meaning cross-border posters may not see any benefit whereas those posting in Northern Ireland for local delivery could see a potentially significant increase for no additional service benefit.
