Courier Propaganda ?
Just received my copy of the propaganda mag, sorry Courier and on page 4 what do we have :-
"Putting the record straight"
Once again Royal Mail are claiming that we don't have to walk at 4 miles an hour as this would be 14 miles on a 3.5 hour walk.
Very true Royal Mail but even you've got tro allow postman to stop occasionally to put the mail through the door !!!!
The TRUTH Royal Mail is that the speed that postman have to walk at when they are walking IS four miles an hour and as for walks being tested and amended. Dream on.

Royal Mail have made a rod for their own back by admitting that 4mph is wrong, surely it's up to us and the union to ensure that all revisions are done at the correct walk speed and call rate.

Surely all walks tested by Pegasus at 4mph are null and void if Rm insist that no postie is expected
to walk at that speed. Also any deliveries removed from offices would need to be reinstated.

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
ive asked my unit rep what walk speeds are being used to time our deliveries
answer dont know ? and hes involved with implementing it.
i would like confirmation on walk speeds for pegasus so i can take it forward to wtl session to see response from rest of
workforce . our union rep remains strangely muted on such issues noticably he now gets sats off pic of duties etc
WHAT IS THE CORRECT AGREED SPEED TO DETERMINE RESTRUCTRING DUTIES

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
Peagasus uses 6.4 kph (4mph) as the starting point, they then slow it down as the figure comes to each property to deal with gates hills stairs etc. It then allows an unknown period to post the mail prob a second or something re-negoiate the gate or stairs etc then goes back to the default speed of 4mph. So basically by the time obstacles and terrain are accounted for the overall average speed should be around 2mph, however that will include chapping doors getting signatures rumaging in your bag to get the parcel etc. So RM aren't technically lying about saying that we should be walking around an average speed of 2mph on our walk but to make up time for doing our job when we get there we will need to be nearer the 4mph a lot of the time.
Interestingly in our office we're going to see how peagasus works out our walk, which I suspect it will be very accurate and may even say we're working harder than they expect, we'll get a pat on the back and once we are conned into believing all the propaganda we're going to re do all the walks from scratch as in even if you cover the same area as before you're walk will take you off your current route and be so different that you won't know wether you're coming or going and you may be struggling to complete your new walk in the required time. Of course management are now playing down going down the conduct code if you can't do the new run on time but how long will that last once it's the norm to relay on peagasus. Will be hard to say it's not accurate when we'll be shown just how accurate it is on exsisting runs.

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
In my office Pegasus is being implemented with the sole intention of removing 80 hours from it. We are so far over budget the original figure is lost somewhere in time and space. It is the same all over our area (Kent/East Sussex), I forget how many offices have the same target. Walking speed and the evening out of duties has nothing to do with it, it is simply to save money. My DOM told us so it must be true.

I think they said if they got enough replies they would do so in my estimation 2 things could have happened:janitor wrote:Slightly off topic but when was the courier meant to be printing the results of the mail volumes falling or not, they did in the last issue.
1. They did not get what they thought was a statistically significant response to make a valid judgement. Although they did not say how many they would need to publish the results.
or
2. They did not agree with the results so decided not to publish.

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
Re the vote on mail volumes dropping. I agree that they or RM didn't get the figures they currently want so have forgotten all about it for the moment. I questioned our Area manager when he was telling us about how wonderful peagasus is, guess what he ducked the question and changed the subject. I suits Royal Mail at the moment to say volumes are dropping as this they feel will make easier any cuts they make " mail volumes dropping and with this economic climate "seems to be the in phrase when it comes to wanting to implement change.
Looks like they believe Mr Hooper that people have started texting rather than sending letters. I personally think we are going to be very busy this year, default letters sub prime loan companies and the businesses still surviving will be fighting harder and harder for those still in a job with any cash to spare., ie more direct mailings. Just look how many we delievered for Sky in the weeks running up to Christmas.
With regards to the Courier I usually enjoy the articles and prior to this issue thought it did try it's best to be impartial. I'm afraid my opionions been changed.

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
You got to hand it to the buggers
Posters going up all over our office about how unfair the walks are with some being longer than others and the great god pegasus will come and sort it all out. Then all walks will be equal. The sad thing is a lot of our posties are lapping this rubbish up and can't wait to get a "senior man's walk". Problem is the "senior man's walks" aren't that good at the moment and will be a damn sight worse at 4mph. RM once again playing to the lowest common denominator - jealousy.

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
Was chatting to an ex postman on my round about mail volumes he said that in his day he had around 300 letters a day mostly letter size with very very few A4 size and very few packets................ when I told him how many bags and showed him size of magazines he was astounded. That rather blows their theory of mail volumes out of the window!!!!

Re: Courier Propaganda ?
We were told 9 seconds per letterbox, 550 drops, 7 miles, 90% call rate ,3.5 hour delivery.
Working it all out and deducting the 15 minutes for pouch boxes I get 4.06mph which is pretty close to 4 if you ask me!
I find 9 seconds per letterbox a little over the top so if I drop that down to 4 seconds (bare with me), lose 50 drops and 5% call rate and 1 mile with the pouch drops included then I can get it down to 2.1mph which sounds very similar but has a significantly reduced walking speed.
I'm quite certain RM figures have been similarly adjusted to fit their propganda.
(9 secs, 550 drops, 7 miles, 90 %, 195 mins) = 4mph <-- before
(4 secs, 500 drops, 6 miles, 85 %, 210 mins) =2.1mph <-- after
