I was delivering mail to my last street which happens to be an estate set behind a college. Students occassionally use this street as a shortcut to get to a nearby train station. As I said, I only had a few doors left and one of them was a package delivery, so I knocked the door - waiting for a response. All of a sudden I hear the sound of a 'chipped stone' - I thought, possibly, that by knocking the door too hard I had disrupted some stonework or something, however, it happened again. I turned around and to my surprise I saw a student (about 18-19 years old, 5'10) stood about 15-20 metres away throwing stones at me - about the size of your standard cotswold chippings. I looked at him in utter bewilderment as he remarked ' What the f**k are you going to do about it' ?
So there's your predicament, 'what would you do about it' ? I'll let you know what happened after I've heard a few responses ..

Would the correct procedure be to phone your Manager to let them know you're 'cutting off', remove all Royal Mail uniform, and knock seven bells out of them before 'signing back on'? If so I may have been guilty of missing out a step or two

They're responsible for their students at the end of the day and technically, it's assault. I'd also be inclined to get the police involved.
Thats exactly what I did when a couple of school kids started throwing stones at me and broke a window. Went straight to the school reported them and showed them the picture of the damage and the kids. Heard nothing else since and apart from name calling and Postman Pat songs had no trouble at all from the school kids.
