Lord Currie appointed to Royal Mail board

Lord David Currie has been appointed a non-executive member of Royal Mail’s Board, the company announced today (5 January).

Lord Currie, who has wide range of experience in business, education and the public sector, joins the Board as Royal Mail continues its transformation while competing in an open market where mail volumes are declining and competition - especially from electronic communications such as the internet and email - is rapidly intensifying.

Lord Currie was the founding Chairman of Ofcom and has led the regulator since 2002. He will be stepping down in March 2009.

Allan Leighton, Royal Mail’s Chairman, said: "David’s tremendous range of experience in the communications market and across the wider business world will strengthen further the Board and I am delighted he is joining us. David’s skills and background will be an asset to us as we continue to modernise while at the same time supporting the one-price-goes-anywhere Universal Service on which so many of our customers depend."

Lord Currie said: "I am very excited at the prospect of joining Royal Mail at such a critical time in the company’s development and I look forward to working with the rest of the Board as it tackles the challenges that lie ahead in an open market where choice and competition are intensifying."

One of Hooper recommendations was to transfer Postcoms responsibilities to Ofcom and then a few days later someone from Ofcom decides to join us. . A good astute move perhaps.

David Anthony Currie, Baron Currie of Marylebone is the current chairman of Ofcom and a member of the House of Lords under the title of Baron Currie of Marylebone, of Marylebone in the City of Westminster.

Currie is also chairman of the Trillium Investment Fund and acts as an advisor to Unisys. He is also a member of the Dubai Financial Services Authority. [1]

David Currie was the Dean of Cass Business School at City University, London until stepping down in early 2007 after nearly 7 years as dean. [2]

Most of these people come from QUANGO's (and they were created to give jobs to friends/heroes/illicit lovers etc.) and they've never done a proper days work, just go to college/university and then go into teaching then they get these top jobs and proceed to ruin them .

Its about time OPG's were given half a chance to rise to the top of the company, we desperatley need senior managers with experience at the sharp end of Royal Mail on the front line.

Sadly the days when a man could start at the bottom of his company as a ordinary worker and work his way up to the top seem to have been left behind in the 20th century.

How many senior managers have had a go at running a delivery office recently and trying to meet tough budgets whilst having high sick leave levels to contend with.

Not true - there are opportunities for those who are determined to succeed, most of us would baulk at what it is necessary to do to "make" it these days. Many postmen come to the calling later in life when they have already had their share of responsibility, they are educated, intelligent and innovative and have absolutely no intention of getting in the saddle again. We did have a system of cadets who should have become the cadre for management but the system appears to have fallen flat, though there seems to have been an attempt to revive it. Education, education, education - is still the key, it is never too late to learn and of course you need to be an utter bastard - but hey if the cap fits....................

We are so often told that our running costs are higher than our so-called competitors. Yet here is another case of someone being taken on, with a contract which allows them to work very few hours, for a high wage. How was it put to us....?
Oh yes, underworked and over paid.

He will be earning £30,000 a year, for working two days a month. Leighton worked(?) 1 day a week, for a seven figure sum. Isn't there a pattern forming here?
The high ranking ones work very few hours for a massive hourly rate. Which in the case of Currie, works out at £156.25 per hour, assuming an 8 hour day (the article isn't specific), BEFORE any bonuses. And let's face it, there will be big bonuses for him to make. These lazy greedy people disgust me!!!

Why can't they EARN their wages, like we do?
