what is expected?

Post by morleyposty »

joined rm as p/t postperson early december.

at the moment im working with a colleague and we do half's or when theres 3 of us then it's 1/3 on any paticular round.

how long will it be like this? and is there a guide line on new starters doing certain amount and/or does it depend on a paticulae DO on how much you are expected to do?
i also want to know that how soon will i be expected to be doing my own complete round by myself?

I'm really surprised that that you've had it so good for so long  If there are too many staff then RM will look to either get rid of you or transfer you to another office. My office they now get a map and are just told to get on with it  (I wish I'd never told them about Google maps :d'oh! ).

Normally it's Monday induction, four days shaddowing an established postie, then it's out on your own the second week.

yes thats right but im on about when is the right/sufficent time for a dom to give/expects a rookie postman to become a fully fledged experienced postman who is ready to take up a complete round all by his/her self?

From the second week you would be covering whatever walks you are needed for to cover leave or sickness - and that could continue for some considerable time until you apply for a vacant walk that nobody more senior to you is interested in.

One week used to be the normal timescale but as I said in my office there is no training given to few recuits (probably why they leave so quickly).

When I first started, I had 1.5 days tuition on the round I was due to take over. I had never worked for RM before in my life and since then it's just learn as you go, in all aspects of the office...

:nana That's the way it should be done. you must be working in a good office.Good training makes good workers.
It is sad that so many offices do not do this, and the poor newcomeres usually learn by default, and often get looked upon
as being "useless" through lack of correct training.

When I started as a part-timer we had a full weeks induction in the classroom, taught by a tutor, we went through everything from how a Mail Centre operates, watching videos on IB etc, and finally we had a little quiz to see what we had learnt. Pretty good i thought. I doubt it happens today judging by the comments. Probably made all the tutors redundant.

When I started it was three weeks before I went out on delivery on my own, two weeks training at the old RM school in Kings Cross, then a weeks local training at my office, even in those days it was hard work when you first started on your own, how the new recruits are treated now in some offices is a disgrace :no no

I day classroom training then rest of the week with the workplace coach who gets paid £30 a week for doing the coach job.

Then you are supposed to have six weeks on the same delivery/duty after that your released into the system to beome a reserve.

A paticular duty should be designated a training duty and everyone should be aware what this duty is.
