Peterborough's MP expresses concern for future of city's mail sorting office

THE city's MP has expressed his concern for the stability of jobs at the Peterborough Mail Sorting Office.
Although he welcomes new national proposals for improving the regulation of the postal market and the possibility of raising private capital to fund improvements in services, Stewart Jackson is concerned the possibility of large-scale cost-cutting by a private organisation may well put dozens of jobs at risk at the Werrington sorting office.

Unions are warning of 40,000 to 50,000 job losses nationwide.

Furthermore, Mr Jackson, who paid a visit to the centre last month, is concerned that the Government’s intention to use £22billion of assets from the company’s pension fund, enhancing their own balance sheet in the short term, will incur a massive, almost open-ended commitment that the taxpayer will meet all pension costs in the future.

Mr Jackson said: “There are clearly a number of valid observations made by Richard Hooper in his report on the future viability of Royal Mail. I welcome many of the report’s recommendations.

“However, Royal Mail is a very significant employer in the city and the possibility of job losses at Papyrus Road is uppermost in my mind.

“I shall be monitoring this situation carefully as it develops.”

Well Waco Jacko,if the Hooper report is implemented ,you will be seeing a lot of job losses in peterborough,as a matter of interest what recommendations do you welcome?, the Government support the increase of the retirement age of postal workers to 65 and the removal of our final salary scheme to be replaced by an inferior pension plan that worsens our conditions, do you welcome that?,do you welcome the selling of royal Mail into the private sector,c'mon Jacko tell us what you 'welcome'........
