im new to the job and was doing my rounds today as per usual.
i had 4 recorded deliveries to do.
3 of which went smoothly(occupier was in and had card signed).
the final recorded letter the owner/occupier was not in. i then thought that i'll try and leave the letter with the neighbour but they were'nt in either.
the house i wanted to deliver the final recorded post had a secure side alley/passage. so i slid the letter underneath the owners high garden dgate and left a note saying that i have left a post in the garden.
im worried that i may have not followed the proper procedure.
If you signed for a recorded yourself and then put it under a gate then you'll be lucky to keep your job (if you're found out). I would have words with whoever taught you to do that because it is so wrong, the correct procedure is that if you cannot get a signature for a recorded or a special from the intended address then you P739 it and return it to the DO to be collected.

i posted the P739 in the door but did not sign the card but wrote a small note with the tracking number on it saying that left at secure location.

On the card that you have to get signed what did you do?
Anyway, it doesn't really matter, if a recorded (or a special) can't be signed for then it's returned to your DO and a P739 posted to the address telling them to collect it at the office.
Never leave anything (even it it says on the packet to do so) always P739 it and return it to the office.

mosaddler disgruntledpostie1 is spot on with his advice mate, say nothing about what happened, hopefully the customer will keep quiet about it as well, but if they were to make a complaint then your manager should pull you in have a chat and give you a bit of advice on what the correct procedure for handling recordeds etc is.Dont worry its not the end of the world.
As a customer who sends out loads of recordeds there is nothing worse than not having a signature for an item. If something goes missing and there isn`t a signature it is a real pita trying to trace it and get compensation.
as a postman it is part of our job, what we get paid for so i never understand why people don`t follow the correct procedures.

was a sackable offence when I started as a cassie , then I went into distribution as a cassie with a contract , then TC , then AG - the European Working Time Directive improved matters as people got messed about by RM and treated like s*** - the irony was at the time , was that it was still better than Agency Work -
MURDERERS. Need to dispose of a body? Simply parcel it up and post it to yourself via DHL. You will never see it again.

I send recordeds out as a Ebayer - I'm not falling for that - " I never received it " - routine and then the chancer going to Paypal and Paypal siding with them , which of course comes out of my pocket
If people have genuine problems with the PO , I'll back them up

Maybe in the past, but certainly not nowadays. I know of countless incorrect delivery procedures that are allowed and to some extent encouraged by management in order to get more work done, especially with drivers.
Recordeds and normal mail is pretty much seen as fair game now, just get rid of it is the policy and clear as much work as possible. Special deliveries are the only real secure deliveries, not many veer from correct delivery procedures for these items. I would always send anything really important, requiring a signature or time sensitive by SD.
the situation was bothering me so i decided to drive up to the address and see if the guy was there and explained what has happened and luckely enough he was more than happy to sign the form.

im glad thats sorted.
lesson learned
Why do you still have your card It should be back in the DO (along with any undeliverable mail/packets and your keys), can you explain what procedure you're using and maybe we can tell you the procedures you should be using.

I still have my card from Wednesday as we are told to hand it in the next day and not pouch it off as they go missing. Mind you we cover a huge area from our DO and we don't have to go back to sign off.

In my office everyone returns to the office, I know the neighbouring area is much larger and they would pouch off everything but nothing gets brought home. It's interesting that nearly every office has a different set of rules.
