A POSTMAN underwent a six-hour operation to save his arm after being attacked by two Rottweiler dogs.

Keith Davies, 54, of Royston, was faced with the dogs as he delivered post to a £1.3m property in Gazeley Lane, Trumpington, near Cambridge.

He has been in Addenbrooke's Hospital since the incident last week, and has undergone two operations as a result of the incident.

Fellow postal worker Robert Fox visited Mr Davies in hospital.

He said: "Although he's still in hospital, he's getting gradually better. It was a very serious attack."

Mr Davies has worked at the Royal Mail's delivery office in Henley Road, Cambridge, for the last five years.

He suffered severe bite wounds on his arms, back, and legs but was saved by a builder, Anthony Lunn, 44, who attempted to fight off the dogs with an iron bar.

The Rottweilers belonged to the occupier of the property, Rob Stewart, the managing director of Stevenage Packaging and former chairman of Royston Town Football Club.

In the wake of the attack, he has had both animals destroyed.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said: "Enquiries into this incident are ongoing."

She added that Mr Davies had requested that no further details of his condition be released to the public, but that the last information they had received from Addenbrooke's was that he was in a "stable condition".

Mr Fox is an officer with the eastern branch of the CWU postal workers union, which has been running a "bite back" campaign against dangerous dogs for the last year.

He said: "There are more than 5,000 attacks by dogs on postmen in this country every year, from minor incidents to more serious ones like this."

Dave Joyce, the union's national health and safety officer, added: "My union is not anti-dog or anti any specific breed of dog, the overwhelming majority of which cause no problem at all.

"However, there are a significant number of aggressive dogs which need to be dealt with.

So, in other words, they could afford the compensation easily! Shame. It would be better, if it was a serious deterrant to them.

Although, it might be worth trying to have them baned from keeping Dogs in the future. I'm not sure whether it's possible, under these circumstances. But it's at least worth a try, isn't it?

If I was in Mr Davies place, I would hit the owner where it hurts, his bank balance, I would sue for every penny he has, of which he has plenty of.

With regards to Council estates, I think it should be written into the Tenancy agreements, that all Dangerous breeds and part breeds will not be kept on the premises otherwise they will be evicted, The Council should already have such powers to set conditions as they please on Tenancy, as the Dangerous Dogs Act is insufficient as it only covers pure breeds the penalty is paltry, Ellie Lawrenson from merseyside area was killed on New Years Eve 2007 by the family Dog that was part American Pitt Bull and apparently this same dog had also attacked other people and the Police didn't do anything about it, until this fatility whereas then they were all over the place like flies round a honeypot, if they had acted earlier things would have been different, I also heard of a case of 2 Rotweilers killing a 5 month old baby at a Pub in Yorkshire, another being badly bitten somewhere else I think it is to the South east.

This is happening too often, the law needed amending to cover part breeds with stiffer penalties such as 2 years for possession, 5 years prison for injuries and 10 years for a fatality 10 years for each one, for 2 x 10 = 20 years, 3 x 10 =30 and so on.

Well, first of all. Why is everyone going on about Council Tennants?
This was some rich git, with a £1.5 Million Home. So any restrictions on Council Tennants, wouldn't have made any difference. I live in a Council House. Does that mean that I am some kind of thug, who wouldn't be able to look after a Dog?
I'm getting really sick of everyone looking down on us, like that. There are of course, some rough Council Estates. But there are also some rough privately owned estates. But you seem to conveniently forget about that fact.

I do, however agree with you, that the Dangerous Dogs Act, needs to be changed to include part breeds. But that would affect everyone. Which is exactly what we need. Please stop insulting Council Tennants like myself, with these terrible stereotypes!!!!!

I didn't intend to make sweeping statement about Council tenants, even tho it does come across like that, I was using an example, of course this should apply to private tenants too, in fact to everyone, I was making a point about reducing anti-social behavior by baring certain types of breeds and this is one way enforcing it without the need to clog up the legal system,with private owners its a little more complicated, there would be a need for legislation to cover this particular area.
