Oxford: Sub postmaster suspended after audit

A sub postmaster has been suspended from an Oxford post office after auditors discovered financial irregularities.

Royal Mail said it had sent in a temporary sub postmaster to manage the post office in Walton Street, Jericho.

A spokesman said: “I can confirm there was a routine audit at the branch on December 16.

“As a precautionary measure the sub postmaster was suspended. Luckily, the branch reopened straight away with a temporary sub postmaster. We’re now carrying out an investigation and the suspension is simply a precautionary measure.”

Royal Mail refused to identify the sub postmaster nor comment on what the findings of the audit had been.

The investigation is expected to last for several weeks.

Meanwhile, Royal Mail has also said it is still looking for a serious applicant to take on the nearby Woodstock Road post office franchise. The Oxford Mail reported last month that Lloyds Pharmacy is shutting down the post counter following the closure of its shop there.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We’re still looking for an applicant with suitable premises, interested in providing a post office service for the area.
