A postman had a six-hour operation after suffering "horrific" injuries when he was attacked by two rottweiler dogs while delivering Christmas mail in Cambridge, a union has said.
Keith Davies, 54, "had his arm nearly ripped clean off" during the attack on Tuesday, said a Communication Workers Union (CWU) official.
Dave Joyce, national health and safety officer for the CWU, said a bricklayer had gone to Mr Davies's aid and "probably saved his life".
Police said the dogs had been destroyed and an inquiry into the attack was under way. Paramedics said Mr Davies's injuries were "severe".
"He had his arm nearly ripped clean off," said Mr Joyce. "He underwent six hours of surgery. He suffered nerve and tendon damage. He has a great big hole in his arm. We don't know whether they are going to save his arm.
"Mr Davies and his family are traumatised. We don't know what long-term psychological damage he will suffer. We don't know whether he'll be able to work as a postman again. He suffered horrific injuries. It's hard to imagine the terror he must have gone through."
Mr Joyce praised bricklayer Anthony Lunn who, he said, saw the attack and intervened.
"He probably saved Mr Davies's life," added Mr Joyce. "Apparently he tried to fight them off then he ran one of the dogs over. It could have been fatal. That man deserves some sort of commendation."
A police spokeswoman said: "We have begun an investigation and statements are being taken. The dogs have been destroyed - voluntarily by their owner."
The Royal Mail said Mr Davies was making "steady progress" and added: "We are, of course, shocked by this incident and are urgently investigating what happened."

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
