A POSTMAN who stole and damaged parcels to fund a gambling addiction has been jailed

Carl Borg, of Second Avenue, Swinton, sobbed as he was jailed for 16 weeks.

Royal Mail started an investigation into the postman after complaints in August from householders that parcels had not been delivered.

He was finally caught after thousands of parcels were discovered dumped on a railway embankment and thousands more were found in his loft.

A search of Borg’s house uncovered four opened parcels including a digital TV receiver which had been taken from one of them.

Borg, based at the Worsley delivery office, told investigators he had been ‘lazy and stupid’.

On Wednesday, December 17, at Manchester Magistrates’ Court he admitted one charge that he stole seven postal packets, a second that he damaged 2,464 packets and two other charges that he delayed delivery of post.

Pat Regan, defending, said Borg resorted to crime to fund an addiction to gambling.

He added: "Out of stupidity he simply decided not to deliver the post. He behaved in the most ridiculous fashion throughout."

Jailing Borg, who also worked as a taxi driver, chairman of the bench Trevor Cunliffe said: "We find these offences very serious. It was also the route to you feeding your gambling habit.

"There’s been a breach of trust. People have sent gifts and people are waiting for things. The effect it’s had on them is enormous."

Outside court dad Denis Borg, 58, said: "We’re heartbroken about it. It does seem a bit harsh. He didn’t steal them; he just got fed up and took the packages to the railway line. They got them all back.

"He was very depressed. He’d been working as a taxi driver and was involved in a bad car crash

"He’d also split with his partner at the time.

"He’s never been in trouble before, never into drugs or anything like that; he was going through a really bad patch in his life."

In a separate case another postman Ian Mitchell, 40, of Assheton Road, Newton Heath, who had worked at the Worsley depot part-time for 16 weeks, was found guilty of one charge of stealing postal packets, two that he damaged them and a fourth that he delayed delivery.

He was given a six month suspended sentence and ordered to pay £1,581 in costs and compensation.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust."
