Round the houses

Concerning the story about the relative speeds of postmen and the time it takes them to do their rounds (Quickening world outpaces snail mail, News, last week), I think an important aspect has been left out of the equation. Here in Belgium, letterboxes are placed at the garden gate or at the beginning of the drive. The postman does not have to walk up a path, circumventing vicious dogs and children’s trikes, before stooping to slip the letter into an inadequate front-door flap. No wonder the Belgian postman completes his round more quickly than his British counterpart.
