thieving postal worker at Brighton mail centre

Hi
I would like to thank the thieving postal worker from the Brighton or Southampton sorting office who stole my Sister's birthday card and money on the 21st November 2008. Thanks for ruining her day and re-enforcing my views on the integrity of postal workers. You are an ambassador for you co-workers.

You know who you are and I will find you out and take the necessary steps to have you prosecuted.

usually I do send valuables recorded but occasional its inconvenient to queue for 1/2 hour in your local PO whilst some low-life chav is trying to con the counter staff for a dodgy tax disc or mrs miggins wants a 1p stamp.

out of interest in which section of the royal mail terms and conditions document does it state that cash is not allowed to be sent in anything other than registered ?

It certainly does not say your are not allowed (although in some overseas locations you are not) but it does just about everything else to try and dissuade you from sending cash in the normal post.

How to send cash or other valuables
Is it safe?
We collect and deliver 82 million letters and parcels a day, six days a week, to over 27 million addresses. We try to make sure each one arrives safely and on time, but occasionally something goes wrong and an item of mail goes astray or gets lost. If this happens to you we’ll do our best to sort it out.

Which service to use?
We recommend that you use either Special Delivery 9am or Special Delivery Next Day to send any valuables or cash. With these services you can buy up to £2,500 compensation for loss or damage and up to £10,000 compensation for consequential loss.

Packaging

If you’re sending valuables you should ensure that it is adequately packaged to avoid damage. Get further information on packaging correctly.

Cash should be packaged securely and so that it is not visible through the envelope. Do not indicate on the outside of the packaging that cash is enclosed.

Coins should not be sent in envelopes. Our automated sorting machinery may damage envelopes containing coins, which can lead to delay in delivery and increase the likelihood of the contents being lost.

Solution

1. Make sure you use the correct service when sending money, jewellery or valuable items. If you send money, jewellery or valuables using any other Royal Mail service except Special Delivery™ you will not be able to claim any compensation in the event of loss or damage.
2. Some countries do not let you send cash or valuable items through the post, so make sure you check the country in our A-Z pages first.

these are the latest rule must admit i'd not read these but am quite sure that the old g.p.o regulations dissalowed money to be sent other than by registered mail

the points you have raised are all good and well and most of the time most people will use one of the solutions when sending cash. however there will always be those that do not and those that can not. the underlying issue however cannot be overlooked. theft is still a problem within the royal mail and should be dealt with

just out of interest i did a quick straw poll of my customers and colleagues today on this subject. out of 25 adults asked 19 had experienced 1 or more instances where an item of standard mail went missing in the past 12 months which contained either cash or other financial instruments (without a named recipient). of the same sample no one could recall any problems encountered with standard mail without financial instruments or standard mail containing cheques or other named financial instruments.

so the question is this, how are the thieves operating within royal mail able to select just those items of mail containing cash or financial instruments (without a named recipient) to steal ? is there some special technique being used ? clearly opening every piece of mail would be out of the question and they would soon arouse suspicion if this were the case.

They could look out for recorded delivery birthday card as it will be obvious there is something in it.

on the other side i had a grey plastic packet yesterday
recorded delivery.
quite obviously had bank notes & loose change in it!
now this had travelled right through the system from down south. customer wasnt in so it was P739'd
shows some just set themselves up.

it seems strange that so many people in brighton are having problems as you say, over this christmas at my mc i have correctly forwarded hundreds of christmas cards to brighton that have a bh postocode on them. We see the same amount each day, its a common problem, i hope they find the culprits before everyone else does
