Quite a scathing article. One question is this. Why is this guy so bothered about what postal workers do? Apparently there jobs are easy and they do nothing vital nowadays that can't be done by somebody else. Why is he so bothered then? Why is it on the news every two minutes? Joe public is being held to ransom he says, then he says we are in the digital age where nobody relies on letters anymore.

This idiot is pretty much like the rest of the people trying to decide RM's future, he can't decide whether it is a service or a business. The answer is that it is a service that is in decline. It should have remained a wholly public company that underwent Government reviews and RM revisions every few years to deal with the shrinking work.

Instead some very greedy people saw an opportunity to make some cash out of the decline of a once great service!

He's right on one point though:

I agree entirely that small packets/parcels are on the increase, you only need to read these forums to figure that one out, letters may be declining but packets are increasing, old APCs need to converted/sold/amalgamated so that Royal Mail can have proper Mail Centres fit for purpose, to use a phrase. The union should abandon this pathetic approach, everybody who wants a job in Royal Mail will get one if they want to stay, whats the problem? Sorry if you have to travel a bit further its tough! Get in the modern world. Private sector staff have to move within reasonable distance and no doubt RM will go above and beyond any other organisation in terms of help/benefits.

Ive also changed my mid re Parcelforce too  i have been calling for it to be sold to maintain RM and the PO but given the recent announcements is it really wise to flog off profitable parts of the "Post Office Group" ?? Not really, GLS actually makes more profit that PF. The group has gone from full seperation of PF from Royal Mail but evidence shows that packets are increasing, what happens now lol? Maybe Parcelforce should be reintergrated and RM focus on this, at least it makes money.

Watch this space.

Got to say i agree with that. Sometimes job losses have to happen, but i think i am right in saying RM has never had compulsory redundancies, and we should all be grateful for that in these tough times :Applause

I've seen this coming for years however people don't trust RM's underhand way of doing things and there's a long line of chain and effect that goes right back to :lfo & :cfo

The problem is that a lot of Senior Mgt come from a sales background , and it's all targets , cut this , don't take annual leave as you're letting the side down b***ocks and have no real understanding of the business . Same has happened in the NHS , at 7am - you wouldn't see too many nurses cars in the car park , come 9 am and there's no space left . You also end with corporations that are neither one thing or the other and spend more time running themselves than actually providing anything .

If they want rid of people - do it properly by complying with MTSF , VR , EVR & RRIS - not fake paternalism as Senior & Middle Management are about as cuddly as a piranha .

You don't believe that jobs should be propped up if theres no need for them surely Axeman. State pays for everything I suppose.

Seems it does, limitless supply for failed banks, billions in tax credits to subsidize cheap labour, hundreds of millions in housing benefit to prop up the private rental sector. Most of it seems to go one way :chuckle

Well someone did and it worked:

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Roosevelt created the New Deal to provide relief for the unemployed, recovery of the economy, and reform of the economic and banking systems, through various agencies, such as the Works Project Administration (WPA), National Recovery Administration (NRA), and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA).[1] Although recovery of the economy was incomplete until World War II, several programs he initiated, such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), continue to have instrumental roles in the nation's commerce. Some of his other legacies include the Social Security system and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Of course it needs vision.

Mark White and you "Night Tonic" offer the same prescription to everything that is said by the two of you!. I suppose getting work done for free of the back's of real worker's appeal's to one and the same!.

Umm when you get sacked/retrenched then under the current system the State will be paying benefits so are you not sure which is better, sitting at home getting dole, or working in a productive job and spending, :hmmmm . especially when, in essence, its that state that pays you both ways when you work for Royal Mail. Don't forget we are heading into a recession so another 50,000 people looking for jobs is only going to make it worse. Brown says in a recession you should spend to make it shorter, seems that only applies if your a big bank.
