WARNING!. For if you elect to discontinue the political levy you will not get a vote in decideing who leads the labour party?. So nothing new there then gordon brown the not so great dictator of the fourth reich!.
WARNING!. For if you elect to discontinue the political levy you will not get a vote in decideing
Absolutley anything to do with the levy! Not just labour leader!
If a vote takes place on breaking the link or stop funding at general election then only levy payers get to vote.
Make do till june 2010 and have your say those of us who stay in and want the link scraped or chnaged do not want to find ourselves in a minority when it comes to a vote!
I jacked in paying the political levy after last years national strikes, and encouraged numerous colleagues to do so. Brown and Co defending :cfo and :lfo before us whilst they took money off us was virtually corrupt. That Hayes and Ward leant towards them was almost as bad. If Labour's assumed capitulation to the Hooper report is a gauge, we were right. Labour are attacking us, why the hell should any CWU member pay to support that?

That has to be decided by the political levy paying membership which includes members from BT ,Virgin Media Alliance and Leicster etc etc etc. Its not something HQ can choose to do or not do when ever they feel like it.
Conference this year chose not to break the link, but set out under what circumstances under which the membership would be asked if they wish to break the link.
Those circumstances are now appearing and developing so I would say its a matter of when and not if we get balloted.

Everyone must know that the political levy is just a vehicle for political ambition for the few and has absolutely nothing to do with shaping Labour Policy nor decision making, no matter what others would have us believe. It is a financial burden we could well do without and could be spent on other things - but just as a matter of interest why would we not withhold payment - that in itself need not require a ballot because it is not a permanent arrangement - then we could have a ballot to either free the money and continue support or have no political levy at all. Everyone then stands or falls on their own recognizance.
Big Daz - perhaps you will be able to confirm a suspicion I have.
If people opt out of the political levy they won't be allowed to vote to suspend any donations to Labour or do I have it wrong.

I belive you are right TBT as those who dont pay the levy are unaffected.
Im hoping a break from Labour will bring back those who have stopped paying the levy.
Bring them back to what? Paying a political levy to which they obviously don't agree or funding some other political aim? It would make most sense to have NO political affiliation at all, no outside causes being funded or supported without the members agreement. The ONLY cause that this union should be concerned with is the pay and working conditions of the members who pay to keep it alive. I don't pay the supermarket to throw stuff in the trolley that suits them and I don't think we should pay a union to be swinging at a tangent on any cause that the leadership thinks is worthwhile.
The political levy covers a wide range of expenditure as defined by Laware you suggesting the CWU confines its activties 100% to the workplace as that is what would happen if there was no political levy! Literally anything of a political nature comes out of the political fund
You seem to forget many on RMC and in the workplaces where RMC members work withdrew from the political levy for one reason that being CWU affilation to the Labour party.

Yes I am suggesting just that - no political levy, no political involvement of any nature, no outside causes and the CWU confines itself purely to the memberships problems - there are more than enough of them and they can't do that properly - therefore it is immaterial what the law is because we are not involved. Anyone who wishes to follow a political path - of whatever party does so at their own expense, in their own time. I criticise the labour party involvement because that is the only party supported - and not because it is Labour - I have been in the past a long standing member of the labour party - but no longer.
But there is nothing in life that is apolitical. Just look at Royal Mail and the Hooper report, Allan Leighton being head hunted by Labour to run (or rundown ) Royal Mail. The strikes in 2007 had Political support from Labour Rebels and other Political Parties and Unions, the Mail Centre Closure (still can't call it rationalisation) is a local political matter which is why local politicians in Crewe are backing the call for RM to negotiate. The Post Office Closure program is certainly political. Even our pay rise and Pay and Mod agreement became political when Broon said we should accept the offer and go back to work.
I think if we banned the Union from any Political matters that would be a mistake. However, I would question any support or commenting on matters that would be outside the interests of its members. For instance I would not support an official presence at an Anti War Rally but I would support an unofficial presence, there is a distinction and they should know which side they would be on when deciding on whether or not to support a certain political stance, demonstration or party.
