Totaly different environment totaly different types of machines as we know by your admission the machines need constant cleaning to keep them clear of dust on the optical surfaces you don't have that in other industry. Yes the motors etc are probably quite reliable but unfortunatly the rest isn't as it's the nature of the job it does. This makes them quite reliant on humans to operate efficently but as we know they quite often break down maybe the staff that maintain /service them aren't quite up to the task eh teaman

totally and utterly pointless direction this thread is going, nobody would argue about the long list of benefits machinary has over humans, the point is what happens when we are all replaced by machines ?. machines and technolgy should be used to benefit all of us and not just to create more profit to line a few peoples pockets . how about using new inventions etc so we all can enjoy a shorter working week ??

If they take 20 minutes off , then thats what I claim nearly everyday for going over. (and before you scream and shout about cutting off. I finish 5 minutes from my house and nearly in the next delivery offices patch. It is unpractical to cut off).TrueBlueTerrier wrote:
The sort letters into the sequence you will deliver them. At the DO you put them into the frame and add flats and packets - apparently trials say the save 10 - 20 minutes - Royal Mail of course are taking the 20minutes as gospel.

Exactly. But my point (which I forgot to make ) is that if these walk sequencing machines come in. RM will use it as an excuse to cut duties or make us start later. These machines should be brought in just simply to alleviate the mail loads we have to deal with.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Yep -

Show me the machine that walks along, reads the address, opens the gate, lifts the letter box flap, pushes the mail through, walks back down the path, closes
the gate again and does the same process hundreds of times a day, in sunshine, rain and snow without breaking down. When they get these machines, then I will be worried.

I work in a small sub post office linked to the post office (under 10 people working there) our local delivery office has these wonderful machines.
Only problem is they don't sequence our mail and so far this xmas they haven't even walk sorted any of our mail so ips is taking much much longer.

I am in a large DO (300) and its worse here. We have about 50% coded but despite us having no Christmas casuals we are getting letters and flats as diverts and raw packets from our MC who got all the casuals this year. Its a mess we have failed 3 days in a row now.themaze wrote:I work in a small sub post office linked to the post office (under 10 people working there) our local delivery office has these wonderful machines.

I blame the Church I mean if Christmas fell on the same date each year RM would be able to plan ahead more easily.

So when we had all the strikes last year royal mail kept harping on about how the flexability would work ie. your mail would come all walk sorted so you could throw it in much quicker , monday and tuesday would be easier days so we could finish earlier then not claim o/t later on the week as were paying back those hours or we could lapse mon/tues as we would have hours to spare.
The truth is though if it's walk sorted were lucky , the only people leaving the office early are those not taking there meal breaks (so add the 40mins in and there up to time) and when asked to lapse a delivery the reply is we'll do what we can but were not going over our time , thus leaving manager with 2 choices do i get a extra body in to cover it or gamble that the others will make enough time to cover it.
Obviously the mananger could help on a lapseing day by sequencing our mail which would enable us to get onto the the vacant job quicker , but do they?
