Why is it then whenever I see managers out on delivery, or if it gets reported on here, there are always in pairs or more. Is it possible they can't do the job of 1 postie by themselves. :hmmmm :hmmmm

Spot on Teebs :Applause :Applause :Applause - an experienced postie is worth much more than they are given credit for and the present culture of trying to cut their hours or replace them is counter productive. I have seen many examples both on delivery and over several weeks in a mail centre where casuals and inexperienced managers were thrown at jobs in huge expensive quantities that would have been done quicker, cheaper and much much more accurately by many fewer experienced and appreciated permanent staff. I believe that Royal Mails mission to remove it's backbone of experience and dedication in favour of a part time malleable work force will be it's biggest mistake and the sight of two so called managers doing the job of one postie (and probably not at 4 miles an hour) supports that.

it has backfired in other privatized industries - the idea was that some people were " tainted beyond redemption and/or too negative to be employed / intransigent " and yes ; though it wasn't for public consumption , it was to neutralize a big organized union .

The problem is when it goes wrong and even a former high profile CEO later admitted that they'd lost a lot of valuable experience , the result was the blind leading the blind .

However that's dogmatism and ideologically driven botched privatizations for you , the openly hostile and aggressive attitude of RM's Senior & Middle Management shows that RM are heading for the same disaster .

All you get is Corporations that spend more time running itself than actually providing something . This has happened with the Met and Sir Ian Blair .

exactly,my answer to those who say its easy being a postie yada yada is to ask why they all want a regular postie if its so easy?
what difference would experience make if its an easy job?

We had 3 managers doing 1 delivery one day they all came back 2.30 hours later - that's 7.30 hours in total.

Its just sooo typical of RM management. We told our DOM we needed to do overtime to clear packets. They asked what we wanted we said 2 hours a York. The DOM said no!. So now on a Sunday there are 2 managers to one van. In my book thats double the overtime (16 hours at managers rate) instead of the 8-10 hours our drivers would have accepted for the same amout of work. My DOM can never ever question me on quality of service. You know what I think this present management is out of its depth.
