Jewellery collection stolen from Royal Mail van

POLICE are appealing for information after a collection of jewellery was stolen from a Royal Mail van in the city centre.
The high value theft occurred between 4.45pm and 5pm on Thursday evening.

The van was targeted whilst parked up in Rose Street, near to the junction with Castle Street, following a collection from a city centre jewellers.

Anyone who might have seen anything suspicious near the van around this time and location is asked to contact the police immediately on 0131 311 3131 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

this is about the fifth time that bags of registered mail have been stolen in Edinurgh city centre. The delivery drivers in the morning now have securty vans to prevent it happening. Presumbly the collection guys dont.

THIEVES have stolen more than £10,000 of jewellery from a Royal Mail van in the city centre.
The merchandise had just been collected from a jewellers in Rose Street, near to the junction with Castle Street, between 4.45pm and 5pm on Thursday.

The postman had stored the package in the rear of his van and went to another nearby shop to make a delivery.

The thief managed to force open the locked door of the vehicle and make off with the jewellery haul.

The postman is believed to have returned to the van around 15 minutes later to discover it had been raided.

Police were today scanning CCTV cameras from the busy street to identify the culprit.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said that considerable force would have been needed to break open the lock. She added: "Royal Mail security staff are working closely with the police in their investigation of this theft from a van.

"Royal Mail takes security very seriously and we are doing all we can to assist the inquiry."

A police spokeswoman said: "Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following a high-value theft of jewellery from a Royal Mail van parked in the city centre.

Cant see how they can discipline the driver - he put the contents in the back and it was locked. What more could he have done?

If he was doing collections, why was he away for 15 minutes

I know in my office the 15 minutes would be for 2 businesses and 10 boxes

he may have to have scanned a lot of item's or be sorting through thing's be careful on here we don't want to prejudice his case there maybe manager's who will use this against him!.

Sorry, my gripe was supposed to be at the slack journalism not the postman involved.
