It's just a pity that RM don't make this much effort, when it comes to protecting the Environment. Just think of all the extra pollution, from all those cars, being taken out on deliveries.Night Tonic wrote:Great to see RMC doing its bit for the environment in recycling old threads. use of ones vehicle on rounds?
Check out the OP - we are just answering a lads question - RMC did not start this thread someone asking for information and advice did. If we did not answer him it would be a very quiet forum.Night Tonic wrote:Great to see RMC doing its bit for the environment in recycling old threads. Actually I could recycle the statement "If you don't like the job leave" to match your views of RMC, but I won't

Well someone asked a question and we will answer it and point out the pros and the con's of their way's and other's!. It can be a big problem getting home after you have been convicted of driving with out insurance and causing the death of someone through your negligence.Night Tonic wrote:Great to see RMC doing its bit for the environment in recycling old threads. Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
Well during the last strike our D.o. was visited by high ranking union reps and they told all the post people who use their cars to only take one pouch.Well on the day we all supposed to do this only one postman was going to do it.Yes me.We were threatened by our manager that if we did this we would all go on the conduct code for changing working practices.Any way i bottled it also due to lack of support and here i am taking nine pouches as usual.
Can anyone tell me if i can take only one pouch without being conducted? I have no drop points on my walk.I know you gonna say use a bike but i dont fancy biking it to work in the morning its the pits!

Just answer this one question, What would happen if your car broke down and you were unable to use it for a while?theeggster wrote:Well during the last strike our D.o. was visited by high ranking union reps and they told all the post people who use their cars to only take one pouch.Well on the day we all supposed to do this only one postman was going to do it.Yes me.We were threatened by our manager that if we did this we would all go on the conduct code for changing working practices.Any way i bottled it also due to lack of support and here i am taking nine pouches as usual.

Nowhere in your contract does it say that you have to provide your own transport

Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
My understanding of it is RM has to provide you transport to your duty, ie a van duty will take you out & drop off your bags. unfortunatley you are usually then left to get back to your home or the Delivery office under your own steam. Car insurance could be a nightmare even if you do not take your own bags out but use it only to get you to your run. Some insurers will only cover you for travelling to one place of work, ie prob the delivery office, drive to your duty & you could be uninsured. Union reps will advise against using your own car and rightly so. Remember it's your fuel & wear & tear it comes out of your pocket.

Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
You should have transport back to your office. jobs should be set this way to allow those drivers who's job it is to convey/return posties back to the office . But in reality whats happened is over the years people have used there cars (job and finnish) and drivers have forgoten they once used to do it as a matter of course and of course the dim dum's love it when theres no provision(due to job and finnish) and the duty structure been modified accordingly to make you work harder and longer. you have evey right to expect to be conveyed to and from your delivery by royal mail vehicles i'd have no objections to picking up walking men if i was a driver as my duty would have to be made smaller the extra traveling to convey/ collect posties would ensure this

Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
Can anyone clarify that it is Royal Mails responsibility to get the postie brought back to the office after the duty. I had a major bust up with my manager over this recently as was put on a duty 10 miles from the office and 20 miles from home, basically told tough s**t thats your job get back yourself. I asked the union rep on it and was told you can claim exepenses by bus etc back to the office if it's over a certain distance however a 10 - 15 minute car journey becomes and hour and a half bus journey.
Just a lot of posts are saying it's down to Royal mail to get you out and back.

its not difficult, just turn up for work one week without the car and Royal Mail HAS to provide transport for your round. Simple as.
DO NOT USE YOUR CARS ON DELIVERY.

Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
I'd like to know the answer to that aswell. Does RM have to provide a means to get you back, do they give you a bus timetable and fare or what? Also, do you get paid until you get back to the DO? If you go straught home after your last letter then fair enough, you get paid until your last letter. What if you have to take packets back to the DO, put stickers on them, log them in the book, surely you get paid for doing that? If it's an hours bus journey back to the DO, thats a lot of overtime, surely it's in RM's interests to get you back quickly and safely?ar26 wrote:Can anyone clarify that it is Royal Mails responsibility to get the postie brought back to the office after the duty. Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
as far as im concerned if you are required to go back to the DO then this is done under your duty time
so if it takes an hour on the bus you stop delivering in time to get a bus to get you back to the DO in time to deal with your P739 items etc

apart from informing your office of your misfortune what happens ?
I mean, its not RM's responsiblity to keep it on the road, its yours or mine or whoever.
If you used an RM vehicle they send someone out and you carry on delivering, does the same apply ? Are or would you be expected to leave your car and deal with it later ?Only happened to me once,,Finished my walk, but R,M did send someone one, with van.
Again, it is worth checking with your own office what the rules are.

You should be being paid while you are on RM business otherwise you may not be insured.NewPostieUK wrote:I'd like to know the answer to that aswell. you go home and come to work in your own time everything inbetween is paid for.
An hour and a half bus journey, not bad. I would be ensuring i was on the bus bringing me back to the office nearest to my finish time, before i finish not after. As RM will argue (when it suits) o/t is voluntary, so don't agree to it.

i agree it is worth checking and getting confirmation in writting from your DOM.
in my own case, yes, you have to leave your car if it's broken down, and see to it later,i was given a van to finish my deliveries---maybe not always the case, anyway, I do not use my car now.

Re: use of ones vehicle on rounds?
I have to say the amount of times cars on deliveries has been discussed shows me one thing - that the union should make its position clear and back the people who are afraid of reprisal forusing acceleration to and from duty.
I for one use my car, i have continually asked reps, area reps and on here for a set in stone answer to all the questions nmentioned in this forum, the threats come thick and fast when i threaten to use a van and the response i get from the union is well, erm, he could be right etc.......
It is IMO this constant "were not sure" that keeps f***ing us
