A BARRHEAD pensioner was shocked to discover a letter more than four years late delivered in her post.

Mae Burns, 85, from Stobbs Drive received the letter which was dated July 14 2004 two weeks ago with a letter of apology from the Royal Mail.

The blunder was spotted by staff at the Royal Mail after bags of undelivered mail were discovered at a former postman’s home.

Thankfully the letter was not of vital importance and had not been tampered with.

Mae said: “I was shocked when I saw the date on the letter but thankfully the letter wasn’t of any importance.

“I received a letter from the Royal Mail apologising for the delay.

“I believe that the postman’s house was being cleared out and that is when the mail was found.

“My neighbour Mrs Brown also received four letters from 2004 but thankfully they were not important.

“But I don’t know if anyone else in the street has received mail that is years out-of-date.

“I have lived here for 49 years and never changed my address and from what I understand Royal Mail has launched an investigation - but I must say the whole situation is very strange.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or be angry about it. Perhaps if the mail was important such as a bill then I would have been more annoyed.

“It seems unbelievable that it could just reappear after all this time. It just proves that everything comes to he who waits.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We take a serious view of anyone tampering in anyway with the delivery of mail.

“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and we will not fail to act if we find anyone not delivering the mail to our high standards.

“In context, 99 per cent of our postmen and women do a great job every day working delivering mail to our customers.

“At Royal Mail we appreciate the non-delivery of mail items, may cause concern and inconvenience.

“But we would remind all customers that we treat incidents such as this very seriously and everything possible is done to prevent them.”
