Royal Mail Statement
11/12/2008
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail carefully plans every postman and postwoman’s walk so that no-one is asked to cover a greater distance or deliver more mail than they are capable of doing and it’s complete nonsense and completely untrue to suggest otherwise. The speed at which we ask our postmen and women to walk is around two miles per hour and the systems we use to help us plan the most effective delivery walks are used in many other countries and have been successfully used nationwide in the UK since 1996."

So why the f**K have spineless reps in my branch and, I daresay, nationwide, agreed to Pegasus revisions at the much higher delivery speed?
Too late Bob G....the damage has been done...we should have been ramming this down the throats of Royal Mail a year ago...

We're starting part of our office with georoute in Jan, and both the Area rep, and assistant area rep, say we have no choice but to try it. Also people are being told if they complain that they won't be able to complete the new duties, that what they are saying is 'premeditated willful delay of mail' and our DOM is pretty good on the whole.

Public Interest Disclosure Act 2004 - the OSA is more for security - usually MOD - that sort of thing and a lot of it dates back to the 60's or earlier - RM have hidden behind it for far too long - If it actually is in the Public Interest - you are OK - also RM keep saying they are a commercial business - a PLC - they can't turn the clock back to Civil Service days as and when it suits them .ldsposti wrote:trueblueterrior the osa im not sure but i think i read somewhere that the whistle blowing act overrules the osa if i can find it i will post it, anyway i say what i want to who i want ha ha ha
No respecting journalist would reveal his/her source - secondly if tackled say as little as possible - put the ball back in RM's court and put the onus of proof onto them .
You cannot have detriment applied against you either for H&S issues or for legitimate trade union activity but use discretion - it's like poker - never reveal your hand & keep them guessing as to what you're hand is .
The Ex - Services guys will tell you that quick march is 120 paces a minute or 3 mph - anything faster is double time and a H&S offence - the union have slides of a Senior Mgt presentation and the average speed throughout expected was 4 mph

I think what RM means is that the postie has to walk an average of 2mph but what they don't say is that they have to walk at 4mph to compensate for the 0mph on people's door steps.

RM will lie their way out of this and will still expect us to walk at 4mph, while denying that we are. We'll be able to prove it in 6 months time, if the public still care.
Remember, 2.1mph! I'll get about halfway round my delivery.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but the average generally used on these tools is 2.6mph and is widely used in Europe. the 4 mph would be the fastest anyone would walk on the flat and from what I can tell there is some spin going on here.
Obviously in RoyalMail you do your best to deliver your round within the acceptable constraints. Some posties use other means such as vehicles to achieve this. As we know mayn argue that workign to rule will demonstrate what a postie can genuinely achieve.
The main problem from my perspective is that some posties are faster than others. Generally spekaing younger can go quicker than the eldest (in general). However, RM can not discriminate on this unless they can show that a posties performance is below acceptable boundaries. Even then RM have to offer training etc. and it would take a approx. 1 year from startign proceeduings against someone based on performance before you could sack them

the "interesting" bit is Senior Management saying " we will introduce performance standards with or without the Union's agreement " - to me that is a quick way of getting somebody through the door without ( at least on paper of course ) being seen to discriminate - predetermined willful delay is another way of getting round it .F0zziebear wrote:Forgive me if I'm wrong but the average generally used on these tools is 2.6mph and is widely used in Europe. the 4 mph would be the fastest anyone would walk on the flat and from what I can tell there is some spin going on here.

RM's Senior & Area management have tried to get people on UIA in the South East but failed in the courts so this is " Plan B " - why spend a year doing it by the book when RM can fit people up ?
Once the braindead RM machine kicks into gear , it's very difficult to stop it and there's orders not to undermine Local Managers that's why there are all these silly cases that have got well out of hand .
The other thing is that Tribunals are not necessarily concerned with rights and wrongs only whether RM followed it's own procedure .
Parcelforce and other Parcel Companies are known to be slavedrivers but they are clever enough ( unlike RM ) to be able to play workers up against each other with Team Leaders etc , secondly it "works" bullying people that they are too slow and/or useless as eventually people will just think it's " normal " - part of the culture and therefore not give RM any problems outside the PO .
What these parcel & distribution companies do is only employ very young and fit people on poor conditions , they are the only people who can keep up , the ones that don't like it will go as a suspected AM on another forum , repeatedly says - problem solved - apparently !
I worked for an agency on a bin round - everything was timed to the last 5 minutes - to provide " value for money "- the unrealistic target culture for the Council - most of the time you were at least jogging - then quell surprise - the bosses of that company tended to employ ex - prisoners - agency staff were just cover and the employer didn't recruit permanent staff
I couldn't believe it when I saw my local council binmen walking at a normal pace - it's no coincidence that my local council is a "relatively fair " employer and there's an organized GMB & UNISON presence .
Many of RM's Senior managers have no experience whatsoever of the public sector - hence the many cock - ups and mistakes - that's no coincidence .

Don't say a word, keep your mouth shut, bring back what you can't deliver.
The reason for not advising management on how much you think you may or may not get done is being charged with PREMEDITATED WILLFUL DELAY OF MAIL
If you tell them nothing you are predetermining nothing, use your experiance for your benefit.
As was pointed out to me recently to charge you under the conduct code the business only has to think you did it.
You on the other hand have to prove your innocence.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

Walking speed
Just a quickie to see what if any impact the shock admission by Royal Mail that we should only be walking 2.1mph, will have on any Pegas***e revisions that are forth coming. When we had the first draft for Pegas***e it was done at the lower speed, and surprise surprise it put duties into our office. But alas our dim was told that was no good, as a duty or two had to be taken out, so off the planners went again this time using a higher walking speed and lower call rate, and low and behold the required duties were set to be axed.
So now that Royal Mail has made this shock admission, where does that leave all the offices who have had Pegas***e implemented and those who are set to go through it , like us
