use of ones vehicle on rounds?

Post by morleyposty »

hi guys.

had my first day today shadowing a pro.

is it necessary to use you own vehicle or is it a choice?
looking at it this way if i did use my car for the rounds the deliveries would be quicker but wear & tear to the vehicle plus petrol cost, insurance would be higher in general.

i rang my insurance company and they do not offer business insurance. so in another words would cancel the current policy and look to buy from another company.
any cheap ones out there?

what are the pros & cons of walking cycling, public transport etc?

You shouldn't use your own car for deliveries, mainly because of the reasons you've already stated plus any time you save RM will want back (under the flexibility agreement ie working all the hours paid). There are plenty of threads about using your car on delivery which I'm sure Teebs will point out and Brothermagrew will point out the Health and Safety ramifacations of it.

If a bike is available then I'd take that otherwise I'd walk or you could always ask for a van. :nervous

mossadler the CWU position is that private cars should not be used on delivery in fact the H&S Department of the CWU have called for an immediate ban. In the interests of fairness you should read all of the following posts made under - Brentwood DO Illegal and Unsafe Use of Private Cars on Delivery which was originally posted under the NEWS Forum you'll probably find it on page 2 or page 3.

After having read all of the posts you will then be able to reach an informed decision for yourself. However, do let us know your thoughts. :wave

Brother Teebs could probably link you directly to it.

i dont like having to use my own vehicle on walks, but if i didn't it would just add to the current confusion and chaos that is my day at work. i am a reserve and i usually am on a different walk in a differet are each day.if i had to rely on somebody to drop me off in a van,do bag drops etc i would never be finished in time, whereas at least if i use my car i can have a bit of control of the situation ie. which way round to do the walk, where to start,i can have a break in my car if i want to, and usually still be finished earlier than i would if i had to rely on management to arrange transport for me. they are thick as sh!t and i would never get anywhere so i dont have much choice

You DO have a choice, it's upto management to get you to the start of your duty and to get you back to the office (all within your duty hours) and it's up to them to get your bags out to the drop points at a reasonable time, otherwise you'd have to cut off because they can't do THEIR job. Your break should be taken before you go out on delivery so that can't be a reason for taking your car. Along with the cost to you for running the car in increased insurance, petrol and general wear and tear.

Job and Finish has gone so there's need to race around just to benefit Royal Mail managers bonuses.

Are you properly insured for carrying business mail in your private car whilst out on delivery through your insurer? What are the likely outcomes if I was involved in an RTA which resulted in a fatality and I was uninsured?

http://www.sentencing-guidelines.gov.uk ... deline.pdf

The CWU are calling for an immediate ban of the use of private cars on delivery and the official union position is that private cars should not be used.

it seems that they want us to use our cars for delivery.

I am sure they do want you to use your vehicles saves them a lot of bother but just you wait till something happens they will not back you and they will not admit to telling you to use them, please please listen to those of us that have seen it all happen and know their games. The job is getting hard enough without all the help they are getting from staf

The question you have to ask is 'What if I don't have a car?' :hmmmm

I sometimes have the car and sometimes my wife has the car so what will they do with me :hmmmm (although that said I'm mostly in a van doing a rural duty).

That's right.
I don't have a car, so Royal Mail have two choices, they provide me with a bicycle or they provide me with a van.
But if I did have a car I would NOT use it for deliveries.
