A scrooge postie has turned his back on the season of goodwill and been arrested after allegedly stealing Christmas cards from Reading people.
The suspected pilfering postie, who worked at the West Reading branch of the Royal Mail’s sorting office in Loverock Road, was arrested on Monday last week.
While other people were opening the first door on their advent calendar, the Katesgrove postman is accused of opening other people’s mail.
An unnamed source explained staff at the depot were told of the postie’s alleged behaviour – he is accused of pocketing Christmas and birthday cards.
Royal Mail spokeswoman Jaquie Stenson said: “I can confirm that an employee from West Reading Delivery Office has been suspended following an internal investigation.
“Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.
“We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.”
Police spokesman Adam Fisher added: “A 33-year-old Reading man has been arrested on suspicion of theft of mail.
“He has been released on bail to attend Loddon Valley Police Station on Friday, January 23.”
This is not the first time in recent months staff at the West Reading sorting office have been forced to investigate an allegedly unscrupulous postie.
In May this year Jason Hopkins, of Abbey Gardens, Woolhampton, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years, and given 200 hours of community service after he admitted stealing post from the West Reading depot.
He was caught out following a Royal Mail sting investigation and said he stole because he was in serious debt.

Postie stole festive cards
If true then I sincerely hope that this miscreant who let's face it, gives the rest of us hard working and honest posties a bad name in the eyes of the members of the public, is secured at least behind bars over the Xmas and New Year period and in my book a 12 months sentence should show him the error of his ways.

Yup,it seems all too often up this neck of the woods that all that happens to thiefs is ,that they have to resign, and it's all forgotten about, the bad un's who do steal, bring suspicion onto the vast majority of hard working men and women, who have never pinched anything.
The more you know, the worse it gets.
