Rutherglen post workers prepare for busiest time of year

POSTMEN and women at the Rutherglen sorting office are preparing for their busiest time of the year, and they have received praise from local MP Tommy McAvoy.

Mr McAvoy paid a visit to the office last week to offer Christmas wishes and encouragement to staff who are bracing themselves for the festive rush.

The Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP was shown around by delivery office manager Alan Drysdale.

Along the way he met a number of posties who will deliver an estimated 214 million items across Scotland in the coming weeks.

Mr McAvoy said: “An incredible effort goes into ensuring that mail is delivered in time for Christmas.

“I'm delighted once again to visit the delivery office in the run up to Christmas and hope that all the postmen and women will be able to get their own break over Christmas once this busy period is over."

Alan Drysdale said that all the staff worked extra hard to make sure Christmas cards and presents reached their destinations in time for Santa coming.

He said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year, and our people really do pull out all the stops throughout the year to ensure mail is delivered quickly but even more so over the busy festive period. So we are pleased that Mr McAvoy came along to witness the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.”

Both the MP and office manager were at pains to stress how important it was to post items on time and to take necessary steps to ensure items are delivered. In the Christmas rush many people can forget things as simple as a postcode making it even harder for the posties to do their job.

In the UK all first class items should be posted by December 20 with all second class having to be sent on the 18th. Special Delivery items should go on December 23.

Airmail to Western Europe should leave on Friday December 12, and for Eastern Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan items should be posted by the 10th. People only have until Friday (December 5) to get items out to the rest of the world.

Mr Drysdale said: “The postal staff do a fantastic job at this time of year to ensure that friends and families stay in touch through their Christmas greetings and gifts. And as usual, we urge our customers to post early so that friends and family have longer to enjoy their Christmas greetings!”
