South west postal workers prepare for strike

Postal workers in south west England were preparing for strike action as Socialist Worker went to press.

More than 100 workers at Bristol’s North Delivery Office were set to strike on Saturday, following a substantial vote for action, unless planned talks see a climbdown over plans to downgrade vacant full time posts into 20-hour contracts.

In nearby Bridgwater, in Somerset, workers are beginning a ballot for strike action over a similar issue. This could see a strike in the run-up to Christmas.

David Wilshire, CWU union branch secretary, told Socialist Worker, “This attempt to reduce the number of full time posts is happening across the country and it must be stopped.

“The issue is not dissimilar from the way Royal Mail is shutting mail centres without proper consultation – there is a conflict between the company’s plans and its agreement with the union.

“The CWU nationally needs to develop a strategy around this, or else we will all be weakened.”

The result of the CWU ballot for strike action over mail centre closures was set to be announced after Socialist Worker had gone to press. Watch this site for a special online report.

South west postal workers prepare for strike

You surely couldn't credit the fact that the Union have only just woken up to this fact? In my office this has been going on for at least 3 years and there is of course the buy down of hours which is common. In fact it will be 3 years this May since I took the buy down - but before I did I checked with the Area Rep if this was in order and he said it was - our Rep took it last year.
