What I can understand from Tman & Fozzie is that just because you're delivering more doesn't mean that there is more :hmmmm it does sound like typical management BS and from my above observations they cannot even get that right (as my mother used to tell me - Truth fears no questions).

Hang on, the recent courier has just admitted that MC are not weighing all the mail so how the bloody hell do you know how much mail is going through the system??? And tman, you're saying "the old chestnut" of my bag is heavier, so in your opinion each item of mail is thicker than before so it weighs more and thats whats created in your eyes "the myth of more mail". I have done a count and in the 3 years of this particular walk that i'm on and the mail has increased per item per address.

And the master plan??? to justify cuts and push through profit driven agendas and scale down the work force at the cost of a worst service.
CUT OFF!!!

Royal Mail must be the only postal operator not struggling to find business then. Too many ostriches in this business "I'm on deliveries so I know what I'm talking about" types - well whoopee. I suppose the situation in the states is also a figment eh.

In the USA? You were telling us before that it was everywhere in the known world that mail volumes were declining.

Even the managers in the D.O. where I am agree the volume of mail is increasing. One can only presume they will have to be sacked for being truthful for once.

You may not like it, but Tman is right :) You can always fall back on "we can only win", well you could except the union isn't communicating anymore is it?

From our Doms mouth, and the new one who has come in, we're up roughly 4% on last year. Plus as I've said before, we've had to question our MC, on the weight of traffic that we have comeing in, and they;ve agreed to up our figures, so how can we have a 100% confidence in what figures MC's come up with?

OK, so once again this topic has sporned plenty of response and some quite divided opinion.

I am willing to be proved wrong, and I am happy to accept from the previous posts that from verbal feedback the post bag is increasing in weight and some other posting indicate that the number of lorries has increased and a DOM has indicated that volumes are up 4%.

I also accept that documentary evidence presented here indicates that revenues have only fallen slighty, and that overall daily volumes have only gone down from 80 million to 79 million according to the documents produced.

There are underlying reasons why I disagree with this:

1. The substiution from social mail to electronic mail is quite clearly a trend, but as a precentage of the overall mail bag it is tiny these days and should not be considered a major topic.
2. The rise of DSA has in some cases increased the use of mail as an advertising medium, but I am unsure whether this has significantly increased volumes.
3. Major companies are encouraging customers to go for online billing, but again this is a relatively small factor
4. The rise of fulfillment and 3D items has significantly increased and redefined the way in which the postal system needs to work.
5. The mail market in increasingly dominated by a relatively small number of large businesses across a few sectors:
The major sectors:
1. Banks - These are the largest by far, all of whom except (HSBC if I am correct) primarily use DSA to distribute their outward mail.
2. Utilities
3. Large retail esp. TESCO
4. Public sector - The public sector has been the largest expanding sector in mail volumes since Labour's investment.

I believe (and shout me down if you like) that the investment in the public sector has masked the decline in mail volumes in other sectors, yet I still hold true that overall volumes (not weight) is decreasing. This is accepted as the norm across Europe and by RM/competitors/Government/Regulator in the UK.

My final point is that out of these four sectors above 2 are vulnerable in the short term to the economic slow down. I except a major cutback in expenditure by the banks as they are not looking to lend. The banks are the biggest sector by far. Secondly retail will suffer in 2009 and their advertising budgets are already suffering and will ocntinue to get worse. In the medium I suspect that the public will get squeezed as the government begins to claw back the record deficit, which according to my statement above will also impact on mail volumes. The only sector that will remain constant is utilities, but be warned that they will be looking to move billing online, which again will decrease revenues.

What should please people is that special delivery has increased in volume and it's a highly profitable product.

If someone wants to argue the logic presented here then feel free. Remember we are talking about volumes at a national level so one needs to consider national factors, such as economic well-being, who posts the majority of mail, advertising trends etc.
