York handle problem

Post by brothermagrew »

vbarna50 wrote:Our DO has acquired a new York. Apparently, we had two non-serious hand/finger injuries today as a result of the handle snapping back to the 'released' position from the 'locked' position. I will be asking the DOM to withdraw it from use before serious hand/finger damage occurs. The DOM and I will check over the York on Monday. Our DO is not used to receiving new equipment, so I am wondering if it is because of its newness or whether the spring mechanism in the handle is faulty.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had this problem? Any feedback would be appreciated. Many thanks.
On the CWU website Letters to Branches - LTB's 050/07 & 876/06 specifically refer to York containers Brake Bar Fault & Modifications. You could do no harm in notifying CWU HQ Health & Safety Department by Email of the problem.

Is this one of those new lightweight yorks? The 40kg ones? I have noticed the handles on them do snap up much more forcefully than the old ones.

I believe Sheffield mail centre H and S reps have same concerns.

vbarna50 wrote:Yes, Philthy Phil, it is one of the new lightweight York containers. The brake handle has now been taped up (brake on) and the York is out of commission.
Nonetheless were the two non-serious hand/finger injuries duly recorded via the online ERICA system as AOD.

Good luck mate.
H&S Rep is not an easy job, but an important and essential one if it's done properly.
