ROYAL Mail's postmen and women in Ballymoney are geared up to deliver an anticipated postbag of more than 1.0 million letters, cards and parcels this festive season.
The local delivery forms part of a Northern Ireland mailbag that is expected to contain 50 million items in the run-up to Christmas. While the 25th of December may be the busiest day of the year for Santa, for Royal Mail it will be Monday 15 December, when it's expected that the average daily mailbag will double in size to a staggering 4 million items.

Royal Mail's 3,500 postmen and women in Northern Ireland will be going the extra mile for customers this Christmas and will be assisted by over 400 specially recruited seasonal staff. To cope with the massive Christmas demand Royal Mail will be laying on four additional flights daily and will be boosting its normal 1,000-strong vehicle fleet – already the largest in Northern Ireland – with 132 extra vans and trucks.

Sammy Graham, Ballymoney delivery office manager, said: "We are already into the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and all our postmen and women will be working flat out to deliver a First Class Christmas to everyone in the Ballymoney area.

"Delivering a bumper Christmas mailbag is a massive challenge but it's one we enjoy each year and are fully geared up to meet.
"We are asking our customers to help ensure that all cards and parcels are delivered before Christmas by making a note of this year's last recommended posting dates and by remembering to post early."

Posting dates for 2008 are:

UK - Saturday, 20 December for 1st Class mail; Thursday, 18 December for 2nd Class mail and Tuesday, 23 December for Special Delivery items.

International - Friday, 5 December for mail to South & Central America, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East, Far East, Asia, New Zealand and Australia; Wednesday, 10 December for mail to Eastern Europe, USA, Canada and Japan and Friday, 12 December for mail to Western Europe.

To help ensure festive greetings and presents arrive safely and on time, senders should remember to write the address clearly and correctly, use the postcode, include a return address, ensure the items are properly wrapped and affix the correct postage.

Lets hope some of these extra staff are heading for delivery offices, because I'll be working my contractual hours only and no more. I certainly won't be working flat out or going that extra mile.

1million items last year we delivered over 3 million and our office is about the same size as Ballymoney Maybe it's one of those wonderful RM counting processes

Plus- I wonder if we'll get extra vans as we've had 5 on permenent hire from last year
