CWU welcomes Pre-Budget Report

Billy Hayes today (Monday) said that the Chancellor’s Pre-Budget Report was “good news for the economy and good news for Britain”.

Responding live on Sky News, Billy went on to say: “What we’ve seen clearly with George Osborne today is ‘do nothing’.

“I think the PBR is good news on pensions, good news on VAT and good news on the top rate of tax. The people who have done well out of this economy over the past few years are now having to pay something back, albeit not until 2011. I think it’s about time people at the top started making their contribution, and at the end of the day people who earn over £150,000 make up only around 2 per cent of taxpayers.

“I think it’s good news on the general direction of travel.”

The Chancellor’s PBR specifically mentioned roles for Royal Mail and the Post Office.

Alastair Darling said that Royal Mail would be part of the National Employment Partnership working with the government to speed up recruitment, increase vacancies through Jobcentre Plus, and to step up access to work-related training.

The Chancellor also announced that the Post Office would be one of the outlets where people could access the Saving Gateway. From 2010, up to 8 million people on low incomes, who put money into the Saving Gateway, will get 50 pence added for each pound they save. The Saving Gateway will be widely available through a range of banks, building societies and credit unions and the Post Office.

Well I don't see what the good news is personally BUT 2.5% saving on VAT is nothing, even on a dozen pork pies.

And as for the quote by Alistair Darling darling, Royal Mail will not commit to the CWU on the prognosis for the rationalisation of mail centres and the planning for deliveries so when he says Royal Mail would be part of the National Employment Partnership does he mean Royal Mail will be providing the clients from all the redundant postmen/women?

The noises about taxing higher earners is just a good sound bite in preparation for the next General Election and to get people to believe in the New Business Party which is New Labour. The rich pay accountants to keep themselves out of trouble and will be OK. This leftist sounding slogan hides the reality that everyone else will pay the price through the .5% increase in national insurance. At the same time there will be massive cuts and closures of vital social programmes of many millions of pounds ( listen to the Radio 4 Today Programme on the PBR , Monday 24 November 2008, at 08:10 approx). Support for New Labour is support for the programme of subsidising the rich at any cost to society here and in other countries. It is support for exploitation,racism,curtailed civil rights, and war. We need an alternative.

IMHO I think that this means RM will carry on employing staff on low hours, so they can look as if they are complying but anyone under their employ will need to claim benefits as well thats for sure.

Yep it does not hurt royalmail to "employ" people on zero hour contract's and pay as you turn up or SOD OFF AND DO ONE CONTRACT'S!. :cfo OVERPAID :lfo UNDERWORKED.
