CHRISTMAS post may be severely delayed across Bridgwater if Post Office workers carry out a possible strike next month.
Staff at the town's sorting office are balloting for strike action in a bid to make Royal Mail reinstate full time jobs when workers leave.
The strike, affecting about 112 workers, would have a massive impact on this year's Christmas post.
Dave Wilshire, area manager for Communications Workers' Union, said: “The ballot closes on December 9, then under law we have to give a week's notice before a strike. It may be from December 16, but the people at the Bridgwater branch will decide if they want to go ahead.”
Mr Wilshire told the Mercury that when a full time member of staff leaves, a part time worker replaces them. This means more time in the sorting office for those remaining, and a delay on delivery rounds.
He added: “We want the issue resolved and not to go on strike. We want realistic discussions and for Royal Mail to reinstate full time jobs.”
A spokesman for Royal Mail said they have not yet heard of any potential strike action in the Bridgwater area
