I think Heath was in the army, but without Googling It I could'nt be sure,
But it's amazing how time gives you perspective,'when I were a lad' I remember the miners strikes of 72 and 74,helping my dad chop wood up for the fires on the picket line at Townhill power station, getting our meals at the miners Institute,my gran helped cook them, and Heaths name was not one to be mentioned without spitting on the ground, but when you look at his record both political and in the war, he was a decent and honourable man.He was in many regards the very embodiment of One Nation Toryism.however at the time he was the deil incarnate to my family and friends. As I say time gives a certain perspective to events.
Very true that, as if any of us in the early 1970s under Heath's Conservative government could have imagined that it was in many respects more left wing than a 'Labour' government from 1997 onwards under Bliar.

I think Heath tried the monetarism idea and there was fit - ups for the likes of the Shrewsbury 3 people like Ricky Tomlinson - he went to the polls on who runs this country - me or the miners and it backfired - Thatcher did try the same idea again - she could use the Winter of Discontent thing to justify it - prior to that the likes of Keith Josepth and her were thought to be loony right - you could also say that she was a very vindictive woman and despite her differences with Ted Heath - she wanted revenge - she did have a bit of luck in her career :hmmmm - even Callaghan said he'd have liked to have had a war  - you could also argue that Thatcher had a taste of her own medicine in the "coup " , the poll tax was a step too far and they knew they'd to get rid of her to save their own skins for a while .
I've still got a 'Free the Shrewsbury Three' leaflet which includes a photo of a young looking Eric Tomlinson.

Yes he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Artillery and In September 1945 he commanded a firing squad to execute a Polish soldier convicted of rape and murder, a fact which he did not reveal until his memoirs were published in 1998.

As an undergraduate, Heath travelled widely in Europe. His opposition to appeasement was nourished by his witnessing first-hand a Nazi Party Nuremberg rally in 1937, where he met top Nazis Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels and Heinrich Himmler at an SS cocktail party. He later described Himmler as "the most evil man I have ever met".

One of the interesting things about Powell's "Rivers Of Blood" speech was that it wasn't aimed particularly at immigration. The open door immigration from the Empire and Commonwealth had been stopped in 1962, 6 years before the speech. If you look at the timing and the content he was actually speaking out against the Race Relations Act. He didn't mind people coming here but thought it a damned cheek that they expected to be treated equally. Powell was old fashioned imperialist who believed in white superiority. During the war he was anti-American because he believed the US was going to pressure us into withdrawal from the empire. He was also opposed to the Commonwealth on the basis that if these people didn't want to be ruled by us why on earth should we bother with them on an equal footing.

I think I got mixed up with the Navy or Army - that must have been his boat " The Morning Cloud " - that was just an interest of his ; along with music , away from the pressures of politics which is actually a good thing .

I don't always buy into " the special relationship " between the USA & the UK , the US was quite ambivalent about the British Empire initially in both World Wars - they had their own agendas but " Kaiser Bill " or Fascism was thought to be a worse threat - I might be wrong , some of you ex - services guys are s**t hot on on History , probably have been through that many library books and watched all those documentaries .

I did have some work dealings with the Local Major from the Barracks working for the Council and they are absolute sticklers for museums and modern history .

Ironically it was former Nazi's and Fascists that founded the EEC , a Nazi " Leadership " Officer became first head of the European Commission in 1957 , there was an intention to reproduce the Policies and structures of 1940's Europe - the orginal Charlemagne Prize was founded by former Fascists - it's been awarded to Tony Blair , Ted Heath , Roy Jenkins and others for removing democratic sovereignty from nation states .

The original directive for Mail Liberalization came from a Dutch Freemarketeer so there's some interesting relevance .

There has been an interesting series on UK TV History about all the attempts to bump Hitler off before the war - apparently some of the British in power thought it wasn't sporting !:arrrghhh :d'oh!

I remember Howard trying a Australian idea called Dog - Whistle in 2005 over Immigration etc , you would get stuff stirred up by the likes of The Sun , it works with some but those rants in the likes of The Daily Mail can put people off and/ or bore / alienate people .

Like or loathe Thatcher , in the 80's she and her party tried to neutralize the NF , she'd suggest the German Guest Worker idea but they also didn't want to be associated with too loony ideas either - in any case the wild Falklands card worked for her - so they could push jingoism as much as they liked .
I believe the BNP tried to infiltrate the Tory Party - the idea was Griffin's to try and turn the party back to pre Enoch Powell " Rivers of Blood " days .

Apparently when Enoch made that speech , Heath was Prime Minister , as soon as he heard about it , he said I want him on the phone now ! , he was told he wasn't as many were not back in the 60's - so Heath said get his agent who was on the phone - and Powell was sacked on the spot .

Enoch Powell made that speech in 1968 and Edward Heath wasn't Prime Minister until 1970.
Edward Heath had visited Germany before the war and actually witnessed a Nuremberg Rally, this being a factor in him being so pro-European to try to avoid such conflict in future.
Sorry I stand corrected , Heath was merely the Tory Party leader in opposition to the then Wilson Labour Government - should have realized that :d'oh! - it's true he had him sacked and some of his Shadow Cabinet threatened to resign if he wasn't - Thatcher said it was " strong meat " but didn't exactly disagree with some of the points either

I didn't like Heath at all back in the 70's. It was his Government which brought in the National
Industrial Relations Court which jailed the Pentonville 5 Dockers, and took on the NUM in 73 - only
to be beaten by them. For which Thatcher took revenge and closed the mines.
But when RM were trying to move all the foreign mail out of Mount Pleasant to HWDC 10 years ago
he was the only Tory MP as far as I can remember, who actually supported our campaign to keep
the work.

Yes. Heath only looks "acceptable" in comparison with the she-devil which followed him.

The "kindly old buffoon" act is another bit of political spin. No-one got to the top of the old hard-line 1960s Tory Party by being that much of a political softy.

Just look at the top 3, most disliked activities for neighbours. bearing in mind that it's a racist Site:
1) With 46% BNP activists.
2) With 37% Muslim activists.
3) With 27% Neo Nazi activists.

So even among their own kind. The BNP and Neo Nazis, are 2 of the top 3 most hated groups! Still, at least their honest about their hatred for anyone who disagrees with their current opinions.

I knew (from personal experience), that these people are often set in their ways, and agressive towards anyone who disagrees. But I didn't realise that they were so willing to turn on each other like that. Still, you live and learn, don't you?

Groups like that always turn on themselves and implode. There's this overwhelming desire amongst members to be the one in charge so whoever's in charge is always facing leadership challenges. The BNP had a major split 12 months ago because of such behaviour and Sadie Graham and a load of other members left to form The Real BNP. There is a real possibility that the membership list was recently leaked with the intent of sparking another contest as there are known to be members discontented with Nick Griffin's leadership. The extremists are unhappy because he's toned down the neo-Nazi rhetoric (and allowed members of "dubious ethnicity") and the "democrats" are unhappy because he has the final say on all policy. I think it really is a case of watch this space for the result of the police investigation into the leak.

At least they're not very organised. I can't find ANY Websites for "The Real BNP". All I can find, are some articles about Sadie being sacked from the BNP. And some general articles about her. Just as well really.

One interesting thing about the leaked list of assorted saddoes , misfits , the inadequate ( two jailed paedophiles ) and nutters in the BNP is the indiscreet notes about their occupations and skills like " Police Officer " ( British or South African under Apartheid ? :hmmmm ) , " Teacher " ( One sacked for going on Porno Lines and Porno Forums during work hours ) , "bodyguard " , reflexologist - the last of these obviously must be useful for treating members whose limbs must be aching after long " Sieg Heil " saluting & foot stomping sessions and the mandatory fights & scuffles with lefties , Asians and amongst themselves . :left:

Also sometimes the notes reveal why the notes are no longer signed up to the " Nationalist Cause " - after one former members entry it states " Will not be renewing after press revelations re BNP Councillors .

If this lilly - livered wimp is not put off by such peccadillos as Bribery ( £5 notes in Pensioner's Christmas Cards ! ) WTF ? :d'oh! , Racist Singing , Non - Payment of Council Tax , Benefit Fraud , Young Male " Art " Films , Attacks on Asian Newsagents , Dishonest Election Leaflets , Criminal Convictions , alleged spying , theft , falsification of accounts and money laundering + general stupidity full stop , then the BNP are obviously far better off without him :left:

this is their "legal eagle" some right rambling drivel and flights of fantasy here - should write for The Courier ? :Very Happy

http://leejohnbarnes.blogspot.com/

I read the "transcript " of the plot or coup with the ex BNP " Pin - up girl " - Sadie Graham - not the sharpest knives in the box or very amateurish even by RM standards :hmmmm

this might ? be what you're looking for Andy 2007 re Real BNP

This is very funny - it's the Hitler's BNP Membership gets leaked one that's on You Tube
http://northwestnationalists.blogspot.c ... eaked.html

One conspiracy theory doing the rounds is that Griffin wants to get on the MEP EEC gravy train and keep the membership level down to 7,500 a figure he can control without challenges

it gets better - according to that John Cruddass speech in Hansard - that was interesting - thanks - as for the message boards some suspect Griffin of protecting Collett
