A MORAY postman who failed to deliver thousands of items of mail was yesterday told by a sheriff that it was a very serious offence.

Allan Grant, 41, of 30 Mossmill Park, Mosstodloch, committed the offence between June 17, 2006, and December 4, 2007.

Grant had earlier admitted intentionally failing to deliver 10,175 packets, and also a charge of defrauding Royal Mail out of £138 in pay. The offence took place at the delivery office at 250 High Street, Elgin, at his home, or elsewhere in Moray.

Fiscal Alison Smith told the court staff became suspicious after a number of complaints from customers on Grant’s round that their post had not been delivered.

Staff checked his car while it was parked near the post office in Elgin, and saw items on the floor of the back seat and the passenger side. He was interviewed by police under caution after 3,142 items were discovered in the car, and he agreed to a search of his house, where the remainder of the 10,175 items were found.

Ian Cruickshank, defending, told the court it was an inordinately large amount of mail, and said his client was under personal stress owing to his father’s death and his mother’s ill-health, and that this had led to an effect on his daily deliveries.

He said: “He had not kept the mail for personal gain.”

Sentencing Grant to 150 hours’ community service, Sheriff Noel McPartlin told him: “This is a serious charge. The disruption caused by your failure to deliver these items must have been considerable and may even have involved financial loss.”

I would have thought that say 130 missing items would generate enough complaints for an investigation to be launched.

The 13,000 items contained one letter and one birthday card with stamps on and six credit card statements, the other 12,992 items were unsolicited catalogues of clothes for old people modeled by young people, come ons from competing television service providers, promises of fortunes from fluffy underwear manufacturers and the Readers Digest and other assorted crap that no one would ever miss, it was probably the missing birthday card that caused the investigation that caught him.

You can get 90 Yorkies, 44 RSCs or RCCs in an Artic. 1 RSC holds an average of just under 100 Mailbags, although I'm not sure how many you generally get in a Yorkie.

So that's an AVERAGE of 4,400 Mailbags per Artic of RSCs. If the Mailbags aren't full, or the items are flimsy: We have been known to have over 300 bags in one RSC. So an Artic could potentially hold over 13,000 mailbags!

WTF! If the offence was so serious, then why did he only get Community Service?
What kind of a deterrant is that?
