Yeah, but I'm also old enough to remember that every time some buildings worker used to go on about how much he'd earnt that week (which always seemed to increase every time it was repeated) he'd conveniently forget to mention that that week had been a seven day week of 14 hour days and came with a bonus, and he'd also forget to mention that the previous week he'd been rained off/sick/no work and got nothing at all.
Even worse, SC60s were mentioned, and as they were for "scabby labourers" (to quote the slang of the time) rather than the 714s of sub-contracting tradesmen, big money was even more unlikely. Then,as now and always, who would pay loadsa money to someone when there's many other people who could do the job for less? Was there a world shortage of blokes who could use a brush or a broom?

Now I wasn't going to mention that, but since you brought it up: All the best comedy characters need a basis in reality,thats where the laugh sprouts from,Too far fetched and it looses impact.
Sorry tman ,hate to correct you but SC60's =self employed tradesmen and 714s self employed labourers. "scabby labourers" was never a term I came across cos the building went piecework big time and even old established family firms switched to sub contract labour ,simply in order to survive in a skewed market place.
Your scorn is well founded though ,cos the end product of this system was -cheap gerry built housing :a massive rise in workplace deaths and injury,unbelievable exploitation of a huge section of the workforce-ie. no sick pay; no holiday pay;unsanitary and dangerous working conditions;no pensions,etc.

Hmmm, curioser and curioser.
Brickies, sparks, plumbers etc were all using 714s, but their bag men, hod carriers etc were on SC60s. If you were really there, you'd know that.....strange, hmmm?

ECH14245 - Construction Industry Scheme: CIS - General - Construction Industry Tax Deduction Scheme (CITDS) - Background

Whilst the Construction Industry Tax Deduction scheme ceased to exist on 31-07-99 CIOs were required to include any closed year irregularities in respect of CITDS in settlements until 06-04-05. If it is appropriate to extend the time limits for recovery of CIS Deductions ( ECH22130) CITDs may still be included in settlements after 06-04-05.

Certificated Subcontractors

Under the CITDS a subcontractor could only be paid gross if they were the holder of one of the following certificates (commonly known as exemption certificates or 714s).

714I - issued to individuals who were sole traders

714S - issued to individuals who were sole traders with a restriction of £150

714P - issued to individuals who were partners in subcontracting Firms and to most company directors for use on behalf of the company

714C - issued to companies whose directors are not issued with a certificate 714P.

715 Vouchers

Following payment the subcontractor (apart from companies) was required to hand to the contractor a form 715. The 715 was a pre-printed personalised voucher which contained details of the amount paid exclusive of VAT. The contractor was then required to send the 715 voucher monthly to the Processing Certificate Centre based in Liverpool.

Uncertificated Subcontractors

If the subcontractor did not hold a valid exemption certificate the contractor was required

* to make deductions at the prescribed rate.

The contractor had to

* record all payments, materials and deductions on forms SC11 (or equivalent)
* pay the deductions over with the monthly PAYE/NIC remittance, and
* complete a form SC35 at the end of the year and submit this with the forms SC11 to the appropriate Employers Section.

The following items were excluded from the payment

* VAT
* materials bought by the subcontractor used in construction operations
* any Construction Industry Training Board CITB levy.

Any payments in respect of travelling and subsistence were to be included in the gross payment and subjected to deductions.

Form SC60

The three part form SC60 was a deduction certificate completed by the contractor and given to the subcontractor as evidence of deductions. The subcontractor would submit the forms SC60 with his SA return and claim the credit for the deductions suffered.

I think it means that if you are registered with the Inland Revenue as a sub-contractor then you have a 714 exemption form (ie. the main contractor does not deduct tax and NI from you) otherwise you'd have deductions taken and the contractor would provide you with a SC60 with you're deductions on it.

I only ask as all i seem to read is a load of moaners and people who want an arguement? I have been a postie for 12 years now and really enjoy the job. Okay i agree Leighton and crozier havn't been the best of leaders. Likewise the CWU.That is life.They are only after one thing in life and that is more ££££. Get rid of them okay, but who would be next in charge? The point i am trying to make is that there are 4000 people on this site and over half wince about petty things.I agree i have learned a lot on here.But please lighten up and enjoy your job. If you don't like the job seek another?

I have always preferred the argument:

If you love the job do your best and work hard.
If you only like or enjoy the job, then word hard and try to change it for the better.
If however, the job makes you mad or miserable and it affects your private life then think about moving on.

I place myself in the 2nd Category. I still really enjoy parts of the job and look forward to going to work, but I can also see that there are bad points to it, and to just leave because of the bad parts seems an admission of defeat. There is nothing wrong in leaving a job you don't like, but also there is nothing wrong in complaining about a job you like and enjoy.

I've seen this industry from both sides. I used to work for a private courier company. We were run ragged. 60 hours per week before OT was paid. Always on the go, driving round on collections permanently tired. Meal breaks (?) were whatever you could snatch as you were going round. Obviously no union.

Then I Joined RM. Got a job at a Parcelforce HalCon RCC. I couldn't believe the difference, it was like I was in a different world that I never knew existed. Half an hour break in the first half of the shift, a full hour meal break and another half hour break in the second period. Of course the job changed. We went from processing mainly stamped parcels and PF48's with just a few 'brutes' of PF24's done in one corner to processing mainly PF24 and PF48 with just a few stamped parcels. The breaks were cut down to a 40 minute meal break and two 20 minute breaks. You know how it goes, pay deals with strings attached. During that time we went from being part of RM to being reorganised as a stand alone company (to be privatised in the second John Major government), the CWU ran a great campain, got a lot of MP's in rural constituencies onside and after a parliamentary enquiry we were brought back into RM.

Eventually Parcelforce closed down the RCC's and I transferred into letters, another culture change. Instead of working a three shift system, it was start at 4:45 AM, home by 11:30. In all my years at RM, change has been the only constant. I would hate to be going back on the job market now so I reckon I'll be here till I retire, unless, of course, I fall victim of the conduct code.

ive worked in rm for nearly 22 years an i admit its not so easy as it used to be but its still a doddle for what we get paid
where else can you run your overtime in with your duty most on my section get there duty an split done before there duty time
and on heavy days just take your time an cut off or book excess simple as that

Out on delivery I love the job,esp if the weather is good like it was today,the views over to the Pentlands to the South,were smashing,the views to the Ochils,in the sun were amazing,I've worked in factories and I will never go back to it,fresh air and good exercise just what a wee fat lad like maself needs .
it's only indoor stuff that pisses me aff.

If I come off driving which should happen soon (keeping my allowances hopefully) I aim to stay on delivery, I had a few issues on driving and will be glad to see the back of it, I am under investigation for something on driving, if they find against me, I am going to refuse to do any more driving for RM no matter how much they offer me, life on the Walk is so simple and fewer responsbilities.
