Monday to Friday working
Rumours are circulating that Royal Mail and the regulator would have no problem with Monday to Friday working but the CWU is the stumbling block. Surely this is a diservice to the membership of this union, why should we not have a normal job and lifestyle like almost all other workers who look forward to their weekends and can plan ahead.
We all know the arguments regarding losing floaters etc but there is no doubt that there is enough postmen willing to take a voluntary package so it could be done painlessly. The savings from this alone would probaly resolve the pension deficit problem and ease all ourv worries. I feel that is not job losses that is driving Billy and co. but the thought of subscription losses, if they had to work 5 Saturdays out of 6 they would whistle a different tune. I say its about time this union moved into the 21st century and negotiate a normal life for the people who are paying them. Why don't they put it tom the membeership?, I think I know why.

Wouldn't there be a loss of jobs? There would be no need for floaters doing each persons different day off...

you are very niave to think that that would solve royal mail problems.if this was to occur then they would still be cutting the flesh to the bone.in all my years on delivery i have seen people panic because of a resign so what would it be like if jobs were to go as the criteria for selection would apply to everybody not necesarily the floaters.
if you were running a business what would you prefer 20,000 redundancies(for example) payouts at a cost of millions or a prolonged attack on terms and conditions where people leave at no cost to the business.
still the possibilities of a better social life over someones job ,what a choice.

We all knew the job involved Saturday working when we all started,so why should it be changed?,I would like Saturdays off but not at the expense off workmates jobs,so I say leave well alone

I think that everyone is missing one important fact, there is too much work for only 5 days and there is more than enough work for a Saturday to continue as a working day.

Why don't you guys take your heads out of your arses??? Royal Mail has always delivered 6days p/w. You knew that when you signed up, didn't you?
The money saved by axeing Sat Del will not sort out the pensions burden either (£5bn I don't think so, leave that to Mandie to sort out).
Posties should be viewing 6 day deliveries as an advantage over competitors and just cos you don't deliver on Saturday doesn't mean the mail will disappear, just more for Monday! Just imagine the public outcry if this was allowed to happen?

Put the issue to the CWU members in a ballot. It's a shame the CWU's "we know better than you" attitude on this issue is probably driven by the fact that more members leaving the sinking RM ship means less weekly subs for them to fill the NEC trough with.
I'm not a betting man but Mon-Fri working would be extremely popular whatever the consequences for jobs. Would put a tenner on it being accepted. Whatever the financial climate is now, there is still a large demand for redundancy pay offs amongst our colleagues. And with the rumoured even later starts on deliveries, who would want to be hoiking a bag of mail around at 4 PM on a Saturday? Would you? Really?
It's a win-win for us IMHO. It is my job and I do think it's a good idea.
