I think they will be a good idea, not necessarily just to combat terrorism but to stop illegal immigrants, that may sound a bit harsh but we can't support them all.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

ID cards will never stop anything, after all, weren't the 7/7 bombers all UK citizens and therefore would have been able to get an ID card. Coming from NI I know a little bit about terrorism and how difficult it is to stop and how easy it is to have some sort of knee jerk reaction that is badly thought out and completely unworkable (you just have to look at the Dangerous Dogs Act for an ill thought out law).

All it is, is an excuse for someone to make a load of money and give very little in return.

You my have some valid points there mate. However, as far as I know, only the UK and the Republic of Ireland have no such scheme in place. Why is it that the Europeans DO have them?, and(assuming that they don't actually work) why don't they scrap theirs?
I think the biggest problems over here are that we listen to the do gooders'' "oh you can't do that, what about the human rights act?" etc etc, and the fact that when they ARE actually needed, theres not a copper in site, so they probably wont check them very often.
Something else that has, on occasion been mentioned, but so far not implemented, is the need for a proper border control, if necessary, with armed border guards, but again, the do gooders will object to that too. One question I would like anyone to answer, think about this carefully, is, in the event of another terrorist attack, and I think its only a matter of when, not if, If we do not have the means to foil the attack, who will get the blame then? You can't blame the government of the day after the event. Look to the likes of Israel, they have lived with the real threat of terror... and THEY ARE ready.
