Fears post delays will carry on into Christmas

LATE deliveries of post are causing havoc for businesses and residents across Cambridge, it has been claimed.

Since the News revealed that several postal rounds in the city have been cut, causing a massive backlog of post at the city's Henley Road delivery office, we have been inundated with reports of delivery problems.

Some businesses claim they have not received any post on some days, while others say mail is arriving as late as 3pm, owing to the new, longer rounds imposed on the city's postmen and women.

Dennis Woodruff, who runs greeting card company Card Works, in Nuffield Road, Chesterton, said late deliveries had caused him major disruption as he prepared for his busiest period in the year.

He said: "I can't afford to have my staff twiddling their thumbs while we wait for orders to process. We're in the middle of a recession and this isn't helping at all.

"We used to get our post at 8.30am, then it was noon, then 2pm and it's now even later."

Roger Impey, of Sunnymede Walk, Cambridge, added: "We used to get our delivery about 9am on weekdays and earlier on a Saturday, but over the last few weeks it has been arriving in the afternoon. Today (Monday, 17 November), it arrived at 1.30pm."

Meanwhile, another reader, who did not wish to be named, said: "Some days we don't get any post. My wife's important blood test results, which determine her daily medication dosage, are not arriving on time, with potentially serious consequences if we don't ring the test centre directly for the results."

Royal Mail claims the teething problems have now been solved, but sources inside the Henley Road office say the backlog is worsening.

The Cambridge branch of the Communication Workers' Union said last week it feared the problems, which arose after the introduction of moves to make Royal Mail more efficient, could hit the Christmas post.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "There are no backlogs of first or second class mail at the Cambridge delivery office. All addresses continue to receive a delivery every day.

"Our postmen and women continue to get used to new rounds under the revision and we can reassure customers that we continue to use additional resources, where necessary, to help bed in the revision changes to Cambridge delivery office."
