Property of the Crown

Post by Barry Trotter »

serious question lads and ladies. When a letter is posted into a post box it becomes the 'property of the crown'. My question is, when does it cease to be the property of the crown? after we deliver the item? or does it remain 'POTC' until opened by the recipient?

Interesting..

I would say once opened by the receiver as opening a letter not addressed to you is an offence, even if posted through your own letterbox.

I had a couple of parcels doorstepped, the last time I made an informal complaint as I did want to go down the official route and get the postie in trouble, when a packet didnt turn up I wondered if it was happening again, I got it replaced by the sender. the next time it was a set of lightbulbs, I decided , I have to make it official, even if it means the postie gets in trouble, it had to be done, because I don't want any items going missing in future and a permanent sticker is put on the delivery frame "if not in use a p739" I work in a different area from my local delivery office so I couldn't go round and have a chat sort of thing.

I never doorstep items or give anything to anyone in the street even if it riles them rotten and get narky " but I live there !!", I have to protect my job, sorry.

I have no idea whether it would be "Crown Property" but it remains the property of Royal Mail until delivered. Anybody got a link for this? Isn't RMG a GovCo now so may not technically be "crown" organisation.

I think the 'crown' part is of old and maybe isnt the wording to use nowadays, I do recall some years back there was a manager in our place who used to always refer to our postings as 'the queens mail'. the royal mail badge also has the crown.
