The main problem is that they are basing all their figures on sequencing of mail and a reduction of mail but we all know that these are not happening
If they want to save money, then they need to bring forward the investment in mechanisation to reduce the IPS and prep times and allow us longer out on the streets (for that we'll need more vehicles to have a break in).
For me, I don't mind being out delivering for 6-7hours (I think the best part of the job) and I think that to safeguard FT jobs we're all going to have to change our views on the 3 1/2 delivery limit.
Some investment in equipment and a lot of investment in people and RM could have their leaner, meaner business that delivers the profits that they crave so much (they should start with cleaning out the deadwood in the managerial grades who only cause problems with their short-term thinking).

Not so bad for guys in the rurals who drive about in a van but on foot, walking about for 4,5 or 6 hours will be to much for alot of staff
im a fit 42 and i struggle on a hot summers day after 3.5 hours,
throw in a longer span with walks that have a lot of climbs and people will struggle to do it.I understand we need to protect full time jobs and rightly so but there is only so much a person can do,so we really do need to be carefull and make sure we get the right deal for the membership when it comes to delivery spans.
That's why I put that in, so that nobody has to carry 11-16kg for hours on end but to split it up, it would basically make every duty a rural enabling longer delivery spans which (in my office anyway) would stop the town/rural jealousy.
And none of that stupid van-share/starburst that they want because someone told them that it's faster.

Sorry mate i was thinking about the large cities and towns that would not be able to do this as it would not be financially possible to fund it.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:johnnyp wrote:Your post is spot on matedisgruntledpostie1 wrote:The main problem is that they are basing all their figures on sequencing of mail and a reduction of mail but we all know that these are not happening![]()

So what are you saying that those that have been in the job for years, completely f**ked after 3.5hours should do 6/7hrs walking the streets, don't think some of us are up to that and still have some sort of family life... remember we are all ages and we all know RM would love to chuck us out the door when we start suffering from f**ked knees and hips from continually getting in and out of vans, carry heavy bags etc. etc.please don't give them a helping hand!!!

Without giving RM any ideas but do you not think that the savings in staffing costs would more than pay for any additional vehicle costs. After all the indoor work will become more automated and therefore will become increasingly difficult to justify a 3 1/2 hours delivery because even now (in my office) it's getting to the stage that the town staff are only spending 1 hour on IPS and 1 1/2 on prep and tie up which creates jealousy from the rural staff who are having to work their full hours.Sorry mate i was thinking about the large cities and towns that would not be able to do this as it would not be financially possible to fund it.
But we all know that any sensible suggestions will be completely ignored and instead their own hairbrained scheme will be implemented

I agree with you that everybody is different and we all have different capabilities but sooner or later there will not be the indoor work to justify FT work and I really think that if we start thinking about it now then the situation in the future will be much easier to manage.shelanda wrote:So what are you saying that those that have been in the job for years, completely f**ked after 3.5hours should do 6/7hrs walking the streets, don't think some of us are up to that and still have some sort of family life... remember we are all ages and we all know RM would love to chuck us out the door when we start suffering from f**ked knees and hips from continually getting in and out of vans, carry heavy bags etc. etc.please don't give them a helping hand!!!
We don't need to always use car based vans but RM can modify vehicles to make it easier to get in and out (ie. a slightly higher driving position) and maybe looking at electric vehicles that maybe don't have the range or speed of the diesel vans but are easy to drive and reduce the carbon emmissions of the company (the other major advantage is that electric vehicles last longer, those milk floats last forever

Yes I do know where you are coming from but unfortunately damage has already been done to a lot of us, and with them expecting us to work till 65 I envisage a lot more problems. They are after a different workforce and sod the rest of us that have given them most of our youth already!!!!

If any stupid posties think that working at speed RM is fine for more than a few days then good luck to you, cause your gonna need it! But trust me if you want to enjoy ANY sort of life when you retire then you better stop talking all this SH*T about longer deliveries because you just wont pick up your pensions after the extra five years RM have given you with HQs sanction! I've been doing rural deliveries for years now and I find it slightly less tiring than biking around and a lot less straining than walking, I spend between 5-6 hours outside and because I've got somewhere to rest/relax I find it makes it less exhusting.
And as I've said, with the increase in automation the indoor work will reduce and the only way to safeguard FT jobs will be to have longer delivery spans and it'll be best to try to think about it now rather than have it foisted upon us later, for us to fight/argue/moan about it because TBH the fight has just about been knocked out of me and natural postition is to plan for the future and not close my eyes and hope everything will be ok and that someone else come to my rescue.

Even getting in and out of the vans 2/300 times a day wears on knees and hips, unless you are lucky not to have any arthritic problems, but most of us have especially after years abusing them for RM, these thoughts should be very carefully considered.
