So how does this actually work then??

You tell your D.O that you are not prepared to work over your time, so he tells you to stream the mail and deliver first class etc. :hmmmm

What doesnt make sense is that it takes time to stream and as a result you dont have time to deliver the streamed mail!! :arrrghhh

Streaming the mail is just one solution to the problem if you tell them you cant extend.

The other solutions are:

1. Discuss with you and come to an agreement at what is the furthest point you will reach on your delivery and get someone else to cover it.

2. Advise you to attempt the delivery and contact them at no expense to you (you are able to claim back phone call costs) at an agreed time to see if you are able to complete or not.

3. Advise you to work to your time and bring any undelivered items to them.

There are also various different streaming methods.

1. Extract all Mail sort single deliveries - (This means check each DP with a single letter only, and if there is only MS for the address then extract and deliver next day). This is a fairly quick method of streaming

2. Extract all Mail sort even if going to DP - this helps cuts down on the weight issue but does take longer.

3. One that I have never heard done is too also stream packets/recorded items and pass these to drivers or someone doing OT. I think if this was an option the call rate would be quicker and more mail would be delivered. Of course the drawback is finding someone willing to take them or a driver willing to do them as invariably they would be just as busy.

Of course is Mail Sort streaming does not work you can stream 2nd class as well. But ultimately its for the manager to find a solution if you are unable or unwilling to extend.

For a walk person streaming does not work very well. As we do not read addresses whilst walking and wait till we get to the door to check and deliver i cant see how this would work for us????? I think the best thing is to deliver all items up till your finish time, allowing travel time back of course then its up to DOM to sort it out and then ALL mail is cleared for the post person the next day.

This 'streaming the mail' idea is another management trick. They will record the walk as having been completed without incurring any overtime. Their job is done. That's why they try it on. Today is sorted. They don't want to know about the chaos that will follow the day after....

They refuse to comprehend that it takes even more time to prep a walk whilst streaming it - again, another trick to try and confuse less experienced employees. The 'ignore the postie talking sense at all costs' approach.

What management are actually doing by giving orders to stream and not getting that mail delivered on the due date is wilfully delaying customers mail. You and I would be sacked for that.

Streaming the mail worked better for managers before the DSA came along. Now when we are told to stream the mailsort we inform them that this wont help as we are still going to most doors with DSA. They CANNOT stream that or fines will be incurred. They have stopped asking us to stream these days and we just leave what we wont manage. We usually take slightly more so that we dont come back early and face wilful charges. :Very Happy

Yes - but if you do it, it is wilful delay - if they do it, it is because of "operational difficulties" - the result is the same of course.

True. Now, outside of the unreal world of Royal Mail, how would a business posting bulk second class mail view the fact that a postman deliberately held back a piece of their mail? They would see it as wilful delay and want action taken. A manager deliberately instructing a postman to hold back their mail for whatever reason is exactly the same thing - wilful delay. The same action should be taken against managers when they encourage "streaming" (holding back a customers mail) for spurious 'operational reasons'. This is service failure deliberately encouraged by managers. In the real world, they would be held to account. In Royal Mail they, amazingly, get away with it. You are one of the self proclaimed ruling clan and therefore untouchable.

It would only take one court case to crack this anomoly.

Down Stream Access - mail from other sources for example DHL, UKMAIL, TNT which they process but which we deliver - the term comes from the fact that the mail enters the system further down stream from the source than if we collected from the sender and processed it.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile
