I've seen this advertised on bus shelters today. I thought it a bit strange as PO's got moved to WHSmiths and now they are taking on the competitions stuff

Has :lfo got his fingers in the DHL pie aswell?

Business is business, or do you not expect other companies to exploit any potential gaps in the market? With so many POs being moved into WH Smith branches, its a perfect time for DHL to seize the moment I'd say. It also gives some degree of choice and I imagine that TNT will get into this in time as well. Thats the whole point of deregulation. We just have to make sure we match or better such services

Are DHL going to deliver granny's letter to little timmy for 30p as well? How about christmas cards? Are they going to deliver anything remotely like we do or just hand it over to us. I have no objection to competition, what I object to is a company like DHL et al using RM at a less than market value price for the service we provide them.

It's not the service that counts it's the price. as for the end game theres only one choice but it realy does make you ponder if royal fail and tnt are in bed together as tnt door drop media has been thrust upon us for some time and no explanation as to why they have not got a delivery service set up in all areas

aren't there any stipulations in the post office contracts awarded to w.h smiths ? if not just where was the royal fail politburo at the time these were negotiated
....no doubt on holiday in caribean or canada makes you think just how stupid these guys really are

You have to say Kudos to DHL and WHShits,they are providing a service that we can't match at the moment!!
In fact,this is an embarresment to us.

Remember something in "Private Eye " magazine about an ex WH Smith's director joining the RM Board and the "coincidental " closure of PO's and replacement PO's being shoehorned into WH Smiths - he then left RM to work for a big building society .

very enterprising ? if nothing else

Can't remember Private Eye being taken to court over publishing that story either .

Postman is spot on and it matters not whether DHL deliver Timmy's birthday card. I don't see why other operators must run exactl;y the same services to be counted as competition anyway. Business does not play by the rules of cricket. If you run a shop that sells everything and another shop opens next door that sells some of your lines, and cheaper than you do, thats business and hard luck basically. Customers won't care.

In fact,this is an embarresment to us.

Fozziebear and others have been critical about RM's Marketing Senior Managers lacking vision and imagination and wasting lots of money on expensive advertising campaigns and agencies ( Post Office Ken , old Boy Band stars ,old Joannie Collins being wheeled out for ads filmed in closed sub Post Offices are good examples )

The other valid criticism of RM's Senior Management would be wasting too much time on planned privatization bids and endless trench warfare with the CWU . Playing Politics is usually a smokescreen to cover the fact you can't manage or to cover up for poor management , instead of actually running a business .

The departure of certain Senior Managers is no coincidence . :lfo :cfo

Interesting story, at the end of the day it'll come down to -Will WHSmith customers use the DHL point in store or will they continue with the status-quo?

Seems as though DHL are taking the piss a bit down my way as they have a billboard advertising their service, the back drop to this was the local mail centre!

I'll have to try and get a pic!

I think you have missed the point here. Let me summarise a few points which exist in previous replies by me.

1. DHL EXpress and DHL Global Mail are essentially two different companies. Express are the equivalent of Parcelforce and DHL Global Mail are primarily a DSA and international mails business. Whilst they share the DHL brand if you look more closely you will see that they act very indepedently of one another. Therefore DHL Express having service points in WHSmith is a threat to Parcelforce who have been in complete competition for some years.

This is not to say that WHSmith and other large retailers will not consider a tie-up with TNT, DHL Global Mail, or Business Post at sometime in the future. You have to have your eyes wide open and realise that getting footfall into your business premises means you may get into 'commercial' bed with all sorts of organisations. Expect some unlikely bed-fellows in years to come as they are already talking.

In summary this development is not a direct threat to Royal Mail Letters

But whereabouts in the W H Smiths branches will the DHL Servicepoints be located ?
Back of the basement or back of the first floor like Smith's Post Office branches - or near the front doors and tills ?

Basically W H Smiths need all the extra business they can with people like Tesco and Amazon encroaching on there main retail lines they could end up only supplying these types of services, or possibly RM could need to look elsewhere for outsourcing sites for POs.
