AN investigation was under way yesterday after cheeky thieves pinched mail from two on-street storage boxes.

Letters and recorded delivery packages were taken from the boxes, which are used by posties to store mail as they go about their rounds.

One irate businessman, whose goods vanished after he ordered them online, told the Paisley Daily Express: “I got a card through my door asking me to collect recorded delivery mail at the depot in Underwood Road, Paisley, but when I went round there, they couldn’t find my mail.

“That was on Friday and, when I went back to the depot on Monday, they still couldn’t find it.

“Somebody from the Post Office then phoned to tell me that my item was among a batch of stolen mail that had been taken from two boxes.

“I was also told that packaging, thought to be from the stolen mail, was found lying on the streets nearby.”

The storage boxes targeted by the thieves are in the Lounsdale area of Paisley.

One of the boxes is so badly damaged by rust that it is possible to put your fingers inside and grab items of mail.

Now a joint probe has been launched by Strathclyde Police and the Royal Mail’s investigations department in a bid to trace the thieves.

A Royal Mail source explained: “The pouch boxes are used by posties to store mail.

“They either drop stuff off and store it in them or pick it up later.

“These boxes are securely locked.”

Bosses at the Royal Mail have stressed that no postal staff are believed to be involved in the thefts.

A spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail can confirm that two pouch boxes in Paisley were broken into and a very small number of packets was stolen.

“We are working closely with the police on this matter and would like to apologise to customers for any convenience caused.

“The two pouch boxes are currently not in use and will be replaced by new high security pouch boxes.”

A police spokeswoman added: “We can confirm that we have received a report of theft and our inquiries are continuing.”
