It was not a miltary target the nation was a war nation as germany was but did the end justify the mean's!. It did save many live's in the end though and maybe if it stop's a world war in future may have been a good thing too!. But their is a world peace day and the end of the last world war is a fitting place to remember never again!.NWpostie wrote:How about 6 of august when the first atom bomb was droped on the inocent of a nation at war!.[/quote]k979aaa wrote:DB1100 wrote:There should be a special day for the white poppy, the red poppy is for Remembrance Sunday and the day should not be used to try and make statements. The red poppy is not worn to glorify war but to honour those who have paid the price.People should respect this and keep their white poppies for another day.gaza1968 wrote:I am wearing my WHITE on as ido rember the fallen but belive the there is no need for war and its the working classes the pay for the bosses conflicts
I don't think the Japanese were so innocent, they all committed or is indirectly responable for support the war and all attrocities committed thereof which has plagued Japanese relations for years and still do round the Asian rim, the USA and the UK, the rape and murder of Nanking, Hong Kong, Singapore, "Comfort women" aka forced Sex Slaves, POW treatment, Medical experiment on prisoners, indsicriminate slaughter of innocent Civilians including babies, the Atomic Bomb was PAYBACK time and they knew it, I have been to Hiroshima and saw the museum and the dome, the Japanese admitted as much that they deserved it and bear no bitterness to us for it, they knew it was the fortune of war.
If the Japanese had refused to surrende, pretty soon the place would be one big wasteland and there would be no Japanese race left, if the Japanese had possession of the A-Bomb before us,they would have used it quite indiscriminately without a doubt.
so no guilt over that, I would have dropped the bomb as well had I been the pilot and not looked back.

When I went to Northern Ireland in the 70,s we were welcomed by some, plus as stated before the wearing of poppies is for the fallen and still suffering Servicemen and women its not worn for the Politicians or to glorify war,its worn to say we recognise the sacrifice made by others wether or not we agree with it and on a last point,if you think there is peace in the world today, you are living in cloud cuckoo land as long as there are politicians Tommy Atkins and his foreign equivalents will be being the price.

I wear a poppy not only to remember the dead but to REMIND others of the sacrifice and how the world is a better place for it. We worship in Churches because they were built for that purpose. And Guy Fawkes day is really just an excuse for a night with the kids. Where on earth would we be without history??

I understand what you are saying but it is all subjective and there's no way of telling what would have become of our generations without the sacrifices of which you speak. The people living in countries which were never part of those sacrifices aren't all opressed, so how much worse off are they for not making sacrifices?greynut wrote:the world is a better place for it.

I don't think the Irish would nuke us at all, if ever, there is too many Irish people in the UK and by nuking the UK they would kill their own as well, many Irish have intgrated in British society as Brits have in Irish society, we also recruit lots of Irishmen in the British army during WW1 and WW2 where many believed in what they are fighting for in spite of Irish leader DeValera craven cosying up with the Nazis and Japos, many Irish still do serve in the British army today, many are in the Royal Irish Regiment and the Irish Guards as well as other regiments, they have recently had a homecoming parade in Belfast, I also heard of one incident in the 1980s involving an pro IRA American Senator on a visit to belfast telling a British soldier "to go back to England" only be told in a Dublin accent by the Soldier "I was born in this land !".
simplistic statement without thinking it through will leave you wide open to correction.

Wearing Poppies..
I always contribute to the annual Poppy Appeal, but rarely wear a Poppy. I only have one this year, because my Manager was concerned that he was the only one wearing one in our Section.
The fact is, that in my opinion. If you need to see someone wearing a Poppy (as Greynut suggests), to remind you of the sacrifices made by Servicemen and Women. Then quite frankly, you should be ashamed of yourselves! I don't have any trouble remembering what they have done, and continue to do, for our Country. You just need to turn on the News, or read the Paper, at the moment. To see what they are still doing.
It was a very different matter 90 years ago, when the "Great War" was thought to be the War to end all Wars. And even after World War 2, when it was generally thought, that there would be Peace in their time. But sadly, we now know better, don't we?
Wars are becomming more common, not less common. So there are constant reminders of the massive sacrifices made on behalf of us, and our Country.
You may think that I'm too cynical. But when we are now in a time, when Children aren't allowed to have a minutes silence on Armistace Day, but ARE allowed to wear Poppies.
I just think that the meaning of wearing one, has been lost.

2 Minutes silence.
I work the Late Shift, and was on my way to Work, at 11:00. So I had to pull over, to observe the 2 Minutes silence. But what shocked me, was the fact that no-one else pulled over, and there were pedestrians walking past me, the whole time.
I know that it's not unusual these days. But I thought that it would be different this year, because it's the 90th Aniversary. How wrong I was. Was it any better where you were?

We had a two minute silence at 1100 in Mount Pleasant.
I did notice over the last few days that it seemed to be mainly people over 40 who wear poppies.
But I think this is largely due to the fact that most modern outerwear doesn't have button holes.
Only the more formal overcoats or jackets, which younger people don't generally wear.

I stopped out on my delivery at exactly 11.00 and half way through someone came out of their house and asked me for mail. I just put a finger up to my lips and stayed where I was for 2 minutes. She then asked why I had not delivered her mail straight away. I said I was observing the 2 minutes silence in remembrance. She said "why, its a waste of time". I said "Not to me I witnessed mates die on active service and I was remembering each and everyone of them". Give her her due she apologised and even came out today and gave me a £5 to put in a poppy tin, which I duly did.

It doesn't help, that the Schools don't allow Children to observe Armistace Day.
Would I be right in thinking that the lady who wanted to interrupt you, was under 30?
