Yes but when they were postman it's alright for them to kill the job ,book ghost hours, work for cash jobs, totally carve the job up, but when they become managers if you do it your out the door through the conduct code,he's now the big I am.It's a f**cking joke.I have no Respect what so ever.dvbuk55 wrote:Our current DOM was formerly a postman here about 17 years ago and I have to say he is doing a reasonable job, even though he toes the line with regard to RM policy, he has been a delivery postman, is familiar with the area and is fair minded and does not subscribe to the favouritism that has flourished in recent years, so all in all it has been an improvement. Though some would disagree I am sure.

Deputy Managers - Worse than strike breakers?
Darkside? The one thing that makes me despair is the "them and us" culture that exists in Royal Mail. I've been a postman for almost seven years now and I've had some seriously useless Managers ("The only reason they send Managers to Sheringham is because they can't get them any further out into the North Sea" is what I was told by my trainer when I started the job) but I've always made the effort to get on with them and that effort has always been reciprocated. In fact the fact I've worked under so many rubbish Managers is what inspired me to want to become a Manager because I figured I could do a much better job of it than they were.
I've done the Deputy Managers course and I'm hoping to move up the ladder...mainly because I have two children so the more I earn the better and, to be completely honest, I really don't want to be outside in all weathers delivering mail when I'm 60 years old. How anyone can have a problem with a chap wanting to further and better himself for the sake of his family and children is way beyond my comprehension but at least I know what I'm letting myself in for and I'm acutely aware of the fact that I probably won't be liked...but I suppose you'll always get the odd few who are stuck in their ways and instantly think that because someone is a Manager he's automatically a prick without even giving the bloke a chance.

I wouldn't doubt for a minute your sincerity and desire to do a proper job as a manager and improve your earnings. If I thought for a minute that I could improve things in my D.O. I'd give it a go. The problem is, that even the best managers have to toe the suicidal party line from the Old St Kremlin. We've had a couple of good liners in my D.O. who have done a good job, until reviews found they weren't toeing the party line. They were forced to obey and the service screwed up again. Obedience to orders from above is the R M mantra - no matter how crazy - orders must be obeyed. Loyalty to good service and building staff morale have no place in todays Royal Mail. Loyalty to :lfo & :cfo is all. No questions asked, no deviation. It serves no benefit to the business, it only serves to benefit a few self-interested individuals and their lackies. Sorry themoog, it's a very dark side you are going to in today's environment.themoog wrote:Darkside? The one thing that makes me despair is the "them and us" culture that exists in Royal Mail. Your point about the "suicidal party line" raises an interesting debate. Surely it's not the actual Managers themselves that are the problem per se...it's the system they have to work to that's flawed. Obviously I know that there are good, bad and downright useless Managers and they cannot be absolved of all blame...but the system and ways in which they have to work obviously needs major adjustment. I mean, when you break the job down, it's not really difficult. Make sure the post gets from A to B.Sandyman wrote:

It's interesting to read that you had some good Managers who did a good job despite not adhering to the Royal Mail way. That to me says that the Royal Mail way is blatantly not capable of delivering results...especially when the Managers you allude to were forced to do things by the book and the whole thing fell apart again.

It all boils down to RM's Senior managers and board "managing" solely by dicktat and the area middle managers that are on fixed term contracts subject to Big Al's appraisals that do their bidding , too remote , too top down , a very unhealthy negative culture - you name it - it's one disaster after another -to be fair the previous RM system wasn't that good either when Civil Servant types were in charge , it was likened to something out of 60's Nationalized Industries or even post World War 2 demob days so it's the worst of the two .themoog wrote:Your point about the "suicidal party line" raises an interesting debate. Same problems as most industries only taken to literal extremes ? - However most Industries wouldn't have empire builders of the worst kind and parasitical subordinates to feed a management structure that exists solely for the benefit of the managers in it - there's a lot of rats jumping off a sinking ship and the Emperor with no clothes is going with another to follow when his contract doesn't get renewed .
The apologists for Senior Managers on other sites would just say they are under pressure from Postcon to make RM super corporate hence the Ariel Sharron school of IR and there's not the time to fart about - which makes everything allright of course
There's other issues in the big picture - Gordon's " Public Sector " Reforms " ' - they seem to have failure built into them and don't serve the people they are supposed to serve , the orginal EEC directive from the Dutch Freemarketeer without ringfencing the USO and the unmitigated disaster of the railroaded through Postal Services Act 2000

I am an ex acting manager who passed an assessment who thought that i could make a change,i worked my way through from a part time delivery postie onto meter maid to PHG i also did a unit reps job and area reps job,i can tell you with all my heart its the middle management upwards that makes life hell and fill reams of paper with the mantra we are wonderful we are god don't forget to tell the staff they are crap and don't forget to beat them regular as it makes us feel great.
I like others walked away because after 6 years or more of hearing that rubbish these silly over egotistical idiots come out with you have to walk away because you know that you can never be what they want you to be because you know that the job can not be done the way they want,it shows that you are from the floor because you can't match the crap that poures from their mouths.
There are some good ones but they break them or get shot of them if you could see the managers that are in the office where i am it is to silly for words they want the money but they don't want to do the job and they really don't care as long as they go home on time.

Well done 'bandit650' for telling us the truth how managers are, not all managers or ex-managers are open minded like yourself. Somes people think that posties are just making things upbandit650 wrote:I am an ex acting manager who passed an assessment who thought that i could make a change,i worked my way through from a part time delivery postie onto meter maid to PHG i also did a unit reps job and area reps job,i can tell you with all my heart its the middle management upwards that makes life hell and fill reams of paper with the mantra we are wonderful we are god don't forget to tell the staff they are crap and don't forget to beat them regular as it makes us feel great.

saw this in a now privatized industry - managers saying " I'm taking the money - I can't work with those idiots in charge " or " I'm being undermined by whoever who happened to be a more senior manager's blue - eyed boy "bandit650 wrote:Thanks mailsort6 its black and white with me, right down the middle,i prefer being up front and honest everybody knows where they are with me,my face don't fit but that's ok.I like my mates were postmen and women and we know how to have fun and a laugh.
things went wrong and even a high profile director admitted they'd lost a lot of experience .
Some of these managers got found out as Empire Builders of the worst kind , and the vultures that fed them were also given their marching orders as they'd been cited too often outside the Industry - were an embarrassment etc , some thought they were god's gift to the Industry but they had to go , even if it meant prizing their hands off the exit door handles when told they were "made redundant " .
I've more respect for the ex hard but fair and straight military type managers when they'd say " Whoever thought of this " cost - saving venture " wants f***ing " - or such and such Executive is an idiot or enough propaganda boys - now anything about work ?
