OK - here goes, a joke: a joke is a person who struts around a delivery office pretending it knows what it is talking about, looks gormless and didn't pass any 'O' levels or the 11 plus.

Unfortunately like 2nd delivery, sunday collections, rural post offices, mail centres in every town by the railway station, sending loads of mail by train nationally or through London all cost a lot to run and if you are trying to scale down the service to be in line with revenue then these things go.

I personally think seeing a postie going round on a saturday is part of our society, but we are not prepared to pay for it and do not use saturday deliveries enough to justify it on commercial terms.

Other companies many come in and offer this service instead, but it will be done at a premium and would be a minimum of a two-day service unless it's in the same postcode area.

Ultimately the service will become so simplified and basic that competitors will be able to enter the market, but only if the USO terms are revised as mentioned in another post on here.

Dump saturdays and put everyone on 4x10 hour days with rolling day off. Keeps the floaters/matrix in a job.

No offense to those offices out there that are fully staffed but even of they dropped Saturdays my office would still be understaffed (but ironically still way overbudget

).

A thirty five hour week is a good start for all with no loss of pay!. How hard would it be to raise the cash for a payrise? how about a reduction in hour's instead!. Hell all the gaffer's think we piss off home one hour early any how will it cost royalmail anything then?.

What makes you think RM will pay the same or more for less hours. Far more likely that your pay would go down if they're really looking to cut costs.

A 35 hour week would mean a cut off bag every day for me.

Royal Mail cant decide whether you get paid for the work you do or the hours you work. This is the problem.

TBH if RM offered me a few quid I'd break their arms for it and clear off to somewhere where I'd feel less than a barrier to some despotic managers bonus scheme.

If they go ahead with this, some of the part timers could be deployed to callers office and extending the opening time to 9pm as a compensation for not delivering on a saturday which will also makes it easier for most customers who works office hours.

also helps to retain some staff.

If we lose Saturday deliveries, we lose a sixth of the workforce, and give the competition a window of opportunity to deliver on Saturdays.

We should push for the introduction of Sunday deliveries. This could simply be done on the basis of 4 x 10hr (or 4 x 9hr if we go for shorter working week) days Monday through Friday for existing FT staff, and 2 x 10 hour days for PT on a weekend.

The increasing number of businesses who work on Sundays and the public get a better service, we increase work into our industry, and stop the competition at the same time.
