"Was" is the operative word here. Times are a changing. No one wants to see these jobs go but however you look at it, centralising sorting will save millions, possibly billions and Hooper will see it working successfully elsewhere and recommend restructuring that continues along those lines. "We can only win" is well and truly dead as I've said for a very long time now. Its no good working on the fine details of working conditions or standing outside with a bobble hat on when the bulldozers are already being fired up.

I couldn't bear Thatcher, but she was dead against this federalised Europe and thats what we've got now.
Admiral speech and don't disagree but its all 'should' and 'if' but in reality people won't 'stand up an be counted'. The Brits don't as a whole. Unless Brown is hounded from office, and preferably the entire government, or the CWU has a trick up its sleeve we don't know about, this will go through unopposed.[/quote] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- dont you think we have a slight contradiction going on here Mr NT !!?? of course i forgot you only like to see a certain kind of person standing up for their beliefs- no wolfies allowed here !!!

No I don't but I think you're talking entirely politics. I don't like ANY of the political parties on offer. I'm also a realist where you're perhaps an idealist.

We're not back to the old "we can only win" again are we? That has to be the biggest contradiction of the lot.

I wouldn't say "we can only win". We can also lose.
But I know we can only lose if we don't fight.

Not having a dig, but don't you get it; It's all politics. Limited resources ,who gets what ,value judgments ,cradle to grave, where people interact politics is a given . Without political debate ,there is no social interaction and vice versa. Nothing is apolitical not even Tottenham Hotspur :shhhhh

i dont like any of the political parties and you are right i do talk a lot a politics, life is political . the working class have been at the sharp end throughout history and will probably continue to be so , i realise this , history tells me this. every day i am made aware of my class, throughout my time in the Army and now working for RM. i have become politicised and i have no doubt in my mind that the system i live in is geared up to primarly keep one class, the rich minority in control over the rest of us. the trick is obviously to keep the majority reasonably content , but as we have witnessed lately the excessives of capitalism if allowed and unchecked can become IMO obscene and morally wrong . who is going to pay for all of this, generations of ordinary people , that is the vast majority . i am afraid that i agree with you they will probably get away with it, however this will never stop me from believing that just maybe one day ...........

I don't disagree with you at all borders and to see a job I've been doing for nearly 30 years go like this is heartbreaking. I just don't see striking on its own, as a way to change anything though. A banner is no match for a bulldozer, honourable or not. If we didn't have email or mobile phones then maybe it would be different but even without DSA the work is drying up all the time, not just for us but all postal operators. Its a declining business. I was hopeful that we could get a stronger tie-in with hybrid mail but its too easy to type an email and click 'send' these days so why would anyone bother to post a letter anyway? The golden age of Royal Mail was in the days when telephones were few and far between and travel was too expensive for most people. Everyone relied on post. They just don't anymore and companies now reduce bills if you move to online billing. The only money to be made is in business mail and we're not really geared up to do that properly either.

This is the end of Royal Mail as we know it.

Get used to it as they will force change no matter what the union does.

I don't but I certainly think it can mitigate it and make it less painful for those that are left and those that are willing to leave. You don't ask for what you are willing to settle for in negotiations you aim high and hope the inevitable compromise is somewhere above the worst position you can accept.
